Re: Scoring Thread - Rome

Why are you so much surprised? After Monfils it could be expected that that match might affect Marat and he might develop some serious mental block. And after secod choke, it was even more obvious. Besides, Marat never liked to be a favourite in the match, and being one set up plus double break put him in a huge favourite position when he HAS to win it, so he chokes. And it getting worse when there is a pattern already.

Re: Roma - La Vita Bella! (Sometimes :p)

This is just so painful to watch, somebody sit him in front of one of his best matches or something...

I know he isn't the same player he was, but still, he can do it...

I don't want to remember Marat Safin for these losses, pull it together big man.

Oh Marat, not only is it frustrating to watch a choppy live stream, but to see you lose another match as well when you were so close... wish I knew what was going on in your head.

well, luckily for Marat he wasn't even a single break up in the second set against Hewitt. It was a tight second set and Marat won in by breaking Hewitt serve in the last game, he didn't have to serve it out

edit. btw he did mention in post match itw that it was tough for him to play because he was a favourite in that match

Hewitt was on a high note just winning a tournament, so even with his tiredness and time difference, he was still .... ahem better than M.?

Winning the first set and then... or is it a lapse on concentration, 2 breaks up, too easy, the end is near... but guys like Monfils and Robredo don't just hand it to you.
I don't think it's a confidence issue either. there was no reason to screw up these matches like he did. He was leading at the scoreboard and got nervous? really? to reach round 2?
I hope I'm wrong but to me it looks like he's just doing this farewell tour and nothing more. As in: he enters a tournament, plays one match to please the crowd and say bye, but that's all, don't ask for more. And he loses matches he should have won (was winning!) and just goes: "next!".

Re: Scoring Thread - Rome

There is no doubt in my mind that it is confidence, you don't just get tired all of a sudden. He has recently said yet again that physically, he is perfect. Marat is plain and simply, choking. He has no belief at all and it is clear that he wants to win these matches a lot. He wouldn't be choking this bad other wise, he is feeling the pressure of it being his last year and he doesn't seem the character to go out with a crappy year. He seems to want to win more than say, 2002.

Yeah, it was hard to watch him not even return that tame Robredo second serve...

Re: Roma - La Vita Bella! (Sometimes :p)

yep, Marat pretty much stood motionless for the final serve ... terribly bad sportmanship, IMHO (not to mention the previous couple of shots that he totally tanked - except for the one that ended up being an amazing winner ) ... Robredo turned the match around, remained focused when Marat was having his little hissy-fits and made a great fightback, the very least he deserved was a worthy opponent ... tut tut Marat, that sort of crap belongs in the world of a child learning that 'you can't win them all but at least you tried', not in the world of the champion that you are *sigh*

OK, enough ranting from me

Steph, I didn't expect this from you. He plays really good tennis, he moves well, his shots are working. His game is much better than it was for the most parts of last 2 years. Which basically means that he's putting big effort (by his own standard) into practicing and keeping in shape and that he has a serious attidude. Saying that he doesn't bother, that he just easily goes from one tournament to another is silly to put it mildly. Yes, he's often guilty of lack of effort but it's definitely NOT the case in theset 3 matches which he simply couldn't close. The guy has a serious psyholigical problem and he needs help.

Re: Scoring Thread - Rome

How come he won so many tournaments in a row in 2000, though, he must have been the big favorite at some point, right ?
