Brief summary: Contrary to previuos announcements, Marat might play Davis Cup. He restarted practising on 11 November. Tarpishev is quoted saying: "When he finding his best form, he will play, if not, he will be a replacement."

From the 'OS' ;)
26 November 2007

"Marat has now finished his fitness training in the mountains and will start his tennis practice from today in Valencia. Hernan Gumy arrived yesterday in Valencia and brought with him a new hitting partner for Marat - Guillermo Coria's younger brother who is 17 and a promising junior player.

At this time Marat has not made any decisions with regards to his schedule for the first half of 2008 past the Kooyong Exhibition and the Australian Open. This will be discussed this week in Valencia and as soon as details are available will be posted in the Schedule section."
:D

Tennis-No chance of late Davis Cup call for Safin - Tarpishchev
Wed Nov 28, 2007 12:26am GMT

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

LOS ANGELES, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Russia's Davis Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev has ruled out any chance of Marat Safin being drafted in as a late replacement for this week's final against the United States in Portland, Oregon.

Former world number one Safin has struggled to find top form since coming back from a knee injury and was left out of the four-man squad announced this month.

"This is our strongest team," Tarpishchev told reporters at Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday.

"I think that these guys play better than Marat and he is not going to be here."

Holders Russia will be represented by world number four Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny (19), Igor Andreev (33) and Dmitry Tursunov (34) when the three-day tie starts on Friday.

Although the Russians will be seeking a third Davis Cup title in just six years, Tarpishchev rates the Americans as strong favourites because of home-court advantage.

"It's not by chance that when we played in Moscow on the clay courts we won, because the clay court diminishes the attacking power of the players," he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Russia, spearheaded by the charismatic Safin, edged the U.S. 3-2 in last year's World Group semi-final in Moscow before going on to beat Argentina at the same venue in the final.

"Here we'll be playing on a faster surface and, of course, the serve and volley will be very important factors," Tarpishchev added.

"This is why it's much harder to use tactical elements here. Obviously, the surface makes one team stronger and diminishes the capacities in some way of the other team.

"This is why I thought that back in Moscow we had a slight advantage over the American team. Here, however, I think the American team has this advantage."

The Americans, bidding for their first Davis Cup triumph in 12 years, will be represented in Portland by big-serving Andy Roddick, James Blake and the Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike. (Editing by Ed Osmond)

Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

Poor Tarpi had to leave DENIAL eventually...
I hope this ends all the speculations in the media. I think it's more like them having to leave Denial :tape:

Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

Zubin Hathi (Roanoke, Virginia): Hey Dmitry do you plan to play doubles as well as singles with Safin or someone? Anyways good luck!

SportsNation Dmitry Tursunov: (4:09 PM ET ) We have talked with Marat about it, and we agreed that he will go and get ready for the next doubles season in the Hymalayas. He is doing some conditioning there, and as soon as the Davis Cup is finished I will join him there to discuss our strategy.

"* Griffin, Dallas: What other sports do you play and/or watch besides tennis?

SportsNation Dmitry Tursunov: (4:16 PM ET ) For that info, you can log on to ATPtennis.com. There is more detailed information there. But I have always enjoyed watching curling, it is a very demanding sport both physically and mentally. And my favorite athlete is Brian Boitano. There is something so beautiful about his effortless style."

Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

Gumy : "Now: two crosscourt forehands followed by one backhand down the line” or “One forehand inside out, one forehand crosscourt and one backhand down the line”, “Ok, now one forehand crosscourt, one down the line and one backhand crosscourt”. “Look how nice that forehand was! Perfect, it’s just like that! Good! Great, that’s it!”
How about sending Gumy our great conversation guide ? :aplot:

c'mon, you had a strip tease, you can't get everything
:awww: But, but......

And here too please!
I know some people here are very sensitive and hate polls but sorry, this had to be done. :p :nerner: I have a reputation to uphold after all.
:bounce: Oooooooh, goodie!!!!! Polls with Marat in it :inlove:

I have to agree with Irochka here: Voting for him in the favourite player is not a very hard and weird thing to do for me, but  voting for him as the best DC player .....

I don't mind voting for Marat as my favorite player:p However voting for him as a best DC player is simply ridiculous. I can understand GWH annoyance;)

Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

At least he will still be winning something :tape:

brilliant, now he's gonna get injured while snowboarding
How come that was the first thing I thought too

At first Tarpi forbid them to play football, now Marat is already a good skier, future great snowboarder, what's next - skydiving?
And you think Marat actually listens to Tarpi  :tape:
But if he's a good skier already, I wouldn't be so worried about snowboarding. People sometimes forget that Marat is a pro athlete :p

(forget that he's prone to injuries, his body his perfectly healthy and he will never be injured again :tape:)
He seems to love all that extreme stuff anyway. I can imagine he'd love to try skydiving or bungee jumping too but hope he waits with that until after his career;)

I prefer to think that it's another case of not very correct info on OS. I refuse to believe he'll actually do snowboarding with his height and without any skills.
Join me in Denial :p

I remember Marat saying he loved skiing and would like to try out snowboarding in the future  I guess that's the perfect oppurtunity for him, after all how many times a year does he get the chance for (winter) holidays? Hope he has fun and doesn't injure himself!

Jeeez, ladies, stop acting like his Moms and let the guy have some fun! Nothing he does can better or worsen his reputation anyway and about injuries - you don't think he's aware of that himself? It truly is an art form to constantly expect the worst in life...
:haha: We are probably worse than his mom sometimes  but who can blame us after all these damn injuries :(

have I missed when marat has become a good skier after all when did he have the time did he learn after his knee injury and before his wrist injury.Even roger said he doesn't ski incase of a injury.wendy
Well, I'm sure Roger wouldn't take any chances risking his career but Marat has always tried to have as much fun as possible outside of the court and that's part of his appeal. I don't think snowboarding is all that dangerous as long as he doesn't get on a black ski run ;)

*taking bets on what he'll injure next*

just kidding ;) come on guys. lighten up! it's the holiday season!!! breeaaaattthhhheee.... he needs to learn to snowboard in case the yeti kidnaps him and the only way out is to snowboard to safety :p
 I'm sure he has good instructors and will take care of himself. Don't forget his wise decision to come off the mountain, he's not an idiot (sometimes)
