Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

Some news from the OS:

21 January 2008. Marat News:
Marat is back in Moscow and will have a few days off. On Friday 25th Hernan Gumy will arrive in Moscow and on Sunday 27th he will help Marat celebrate his 28th birthday with his family and friends. On Monday 28th, Marat and Hernan will start working together and practising for the upcoming Davis Cup tie between Russia and Serbia to be help on Indoor Hard Court at Small Sports Arena "Luzhniki", Moscow.
Marat is feeling upbeat about his season and looking forward to more tournaments.

Marat has entered the Dubai Tournament - entries closed today and is considering the Open 13 Tournament at Marseilles from 11 - 17 February. This is still to be confirmed. As both the Masters Series in Indian Wells and Miami have draws of 96, Marat will be at these tournaments. All other schedule announcements will follow later.

In my paranoid little way I was getting worried he was never going to play again :)

PS: Bet he won't be on the practice court on Monday 28th - he'll have one helluva pounding head

poor marat, he needs help to celebrate his bday...

this also sounds as if Marat were a housewife preparing yummy dishes together with Gummy (it even rimes) for their guests :) :) :)

Re: 2008 Pictures thread!

Thanks for the link. Is this the interview from Star-something magazine that Annie was talking about? Can anyone be bothered to give a summary of what the interview is about, or is it re-hashing old news?
yes, it's fom Star-Hit. Not about tennis, just usual questions and nothing new for any Marat fan. But I'm relieved that the intervew didn't turn out too tabloid-like ;)

Re: 2008 Pictures thread!

As Ira said nothing new, but there were few things I liked (not that it's all shocking, but the way Marat talks.... )

- He does funny things on court, because he can do whatever he wants (of course there are some limitations) and tennis players should have fun too, while doing their jobs :)

- Marat likes to sign as Federer. A fan asks him, who he is, and he says "Roger". (my note: that fan must have been male ;)

- He doesn't want to become a tennis coach, because he lacks the ability to teach patiently. "I wouldn't even try, I'd only upset the kid" :)

- Asked what were the biggest expenses on a girl, he says that for the loved ones, nothing should be spared :)

- He wants to have kids :woohoo: "What other purpose in life, do we have? For what else are we here? Of course I want to have a kid, but right now is not the right time"

- Time flies so fast. "As they joke on Comedy Club "- How's life going? - It's getting shorter"

- A man becomes a man at forty :yeah:

- Talking about injuries, and stress on athletes’ bodies, he says that for taller people is much harder. Especially for the spine - sometimes they cannot tie their shoes!

- To be a tennis player might be boring, because for 10 years you travel with the same people on the same places.

- And last but the not least, our Marat mantra: We should be happy for the little things we have :)
And on the following interview (in the link) one the Q&A he says that the flowers for a first date wouldn’t be roses (they are not fashionable now). He’d choose a very nice bouquet of tulips

Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

Somebody was inspired by Safin. When I first saw Tsonga in 2004 he had a game similar to Taylor Dent's: power serve/volley. Now, he's clearly molded his game after Safin's. Cool, huh?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_wertheim/01/27/50.thoughts/index.html
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga + touch = a young Marat Safin. Hard to recall a player -- at least not from the host country -- hijacking an event the way Tsonga did. Interesting to see where he goes from here (aside from up in the rankings from No. 38 to 18) and how he'll be received at Roland Garros.

Spoke to Eric Winogradsky, Tsonga coach's, who professes that his protégé's favorite player was ... Marat Safin.

The Anniversary Marat Would Rather Forget
Can it really be three years ago that former World No. 1 Marat Safin won his last title? Yes, it can. Few would have predicted that when the Russian pin-up boy saved a match point to beat Federer in the semis and then held out Aussie hope Hewitt in the 2005 final that Safin would not add to his 15 career titles in the coming three years. The 2000 US Open finalist has not reached a Grand Slam semifinal since his title run in Melbourne in 2005. Safin did play one of the most memorable matches of the tournament against Baghdatis in the second round, rallying from two sets down to force a fifth set. But the Russian still has never won a match after losing the first two sets.
Ouch, the ATP has downgraded him to 2000 US Open finalist. :tape:

:wavey: Back with more news.

Sampras to face Safin in exhibition in San Jose
January 31, 2008

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Pete Sampras will face former world No. 1 player Marat Safin in an exhibition during the SAP Open on Feb. 18.

Safin was granted a wild-card entry into the tournament Thursday. He will start his week by playing the exhibition against Sampras in a rematch of the 2000 U.S. Open final won by Safin in straight sets. Safin has won four of his seven career matches against Sampras.

Sampras, who retired after winning his record 14th major singles title at the 2002 U.S. Open, spent the past two summers playing in World Team Tennis events and participated on a limited basis this year on the senior circuit formed by former rival Jim Courier.

Sampras played a series of exhibition matches against Roger Federer late last year, winning the final of the three matches. Sampras will play Federer again at Madison Square Garden in New York on March 10.

Safin will play in San Jose for the second straight year. He lost in the quarterfinals last year to Benjamin Becker of Germany.

Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

OMFG! I'd have to book a hotel room, buy train tix & tennis tix for Marseille this weekend (my friends was surprised I wanted to go there cuz I hate this city). Fortunately I hadn't done it before! Anyway good luck Safin in USA! Next time I could see Marat: Roland Garros (looking forward it)

Re: News & Articles - Yeti Premonitions

from OS:

01 February 2008
Marat News: Although thanks to the voting it was certain that Marat would get a WC for Marseille, it was not clear with the quality of the field in Dubai, that Marat would get the necessary WC.
Marat knows he needs the points over the next few weeks to improve his ranking and get him into forthcoming tournaments, so as he is playing well at the moment he decided to try for the US.
Marat has been awarded a WC into the SAP Open, San Jose, Las Vegas and Memphis.
There is an added bonus for US fans in that on the first Monday night, the 18th February, at the SAP open in San Jose, Marat will play an exhibition match against Pete Sampras - a rematch of the 2000 US Open Final. Should be a very exciting evening.

Quote: Marat would like to say sorry to all the fans who voted for him to get a WC for the Open 13 tournament in Marseille - it was amazing and he hopes you will understand why he has decided to change his mind and go to the SAP Open in San Jose instead. This is an opportunity for him to get points and ensure a better ranking for the tournaments coming up especially for the next Grand Slam at Roland Garros. Unquote

:confused:i don't understand what Dubai has to do with it :confused:sorry, sometimes my english disappear:).
does it mean that Marseille draw was too strong and marat had no chance to earn points there?
