This is the first time I've seen Marat actually cuddle his opponent at the net with any emotion, it was just really nice, it looked comforting, I know he's a big tough guy and stuff but he was pretty emotional watching himself over the years on the big screen, it looked like he felt like I did out there today. Happy, sad and relieved.
So well put, Burrow. The fact that Marat went back for seconds (see below, Delpo looking v pleased with himself) showed how much he felt the bittersweetness of the occasion. This was certainly the most lingering net hug I've seen him do, perhaps inevitable given the occasion. Imagine if his opponent had been Roger!
The Wimby 2008 net hug with Djokovic was awkward for sure. Nole hesitated a bit which made Marat look overly keen in comparison! It's just the photos made it look more intimate than it really was.
