Despite having slipped to around 30th in the ATP rankings, Marat Safin remains the leading light of Russian tennis due to his copious talent and charisma. Having again come to his country’s rescue during the fifth and deciding match of the recent Davis Cup quarter-final against France
, the former world number one is dreaming of triumphing at Roland-Garros at last.
A semi-finalist in 2002, he is one of the darlings of the Parisian public, who have taken him to their hearts since he first took part in 1998. For the past few years, Marat has been plagued by repeated injury problems but the ‘King of Bercy’ (courtesy of three POPB titles) may now be able to pull off one of the greatest challenges of his career. At the age of 27, time is running out for him to realise his dream of lifting the Coupe des Mousquetaires
