Johansson Takes Koubek in Four
by Lisa Zimmerman
Sunday, September 5, 2004
For the second time in less than two weeks, Joachim Johansson got the better of Stefan Koubek. After posting a straight-sets win over Koubek at Long Island, the 28th-seeded Swede got past Koubek, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (1), 6-1, 6-2, Sunday in a third-round match at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Koubek, a 27-year-old Austrian, came out strong and battled his opponent evenly, finally taking the first set in a tiebreaker. Johansson seemed to struggle with his backhand throughout the first set and into the second, sending shot after shot high up off the side of his racket. He also established a bad pattern early on of being up 30-0 or 40-0, then promptly losing several points in a row, forcing himself to dig out of a hole. However, Johansson made up ground by relying on his powerful serve, ultimately accumulating 19 aces (compared to Koubek's five) throughout the course of the match.
In spite of his early difficulties, the 22-year-old's expression never changed. His only show of emotion was the occassional ball flung back after a bad point -- and he had a few with a total of 57 unforced errors to Koubek's 46.
Koubek, on the other hand, alternately muttered, talked (sometimes in the direction of his coach) and yelled at himself at a constant pace and seemed to play a steadier game until losing the second-set tiebreaker.
The third set was all Johansson as the Austrian was able to hold serve only once. So frustrated at his play, Koubek began throwing his racket to the ground.
While there were a few spirited points, the match consisted mostly of standard baseline rallies, although both players were successful with net approaches when they were attempted. Koubek was good on 11-of-18 and Johansson came through on 17-of-26.
Johansson also cruised in the fourth set and advanced to match his best career performance at a Grand Slam. He reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon this year.
In the fourth round, Johansson will meet the winner of the match between Jurgen Melzer and Michael Llodra.

- This is Johansson's second US Open. He was eliminated in the first round last year.
- Koubek arrived in the third round after an upset win over Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero.
- After defeating Koubek in the second round, Johansson reached the quarterfinals at Long Island. His best outing of the year came in February, when he captured the first title of his career at Memphis.
