Second Tournament: Sydney 2005

I thought I'd jump in and start the thread since the tournament starts today.
I can't bring myself to call it the Medibankinternational, not that we don't love those who fund tennis events.

The official site has live scoring and a short article about the draw.

http://www.medibankinternational.com/

The tournament has a pretty good field. Pim Pim should have lots of confidence from his win and Carlos Moya seems keen to amend his injury-marred final.

What do we expect from Lleyton?

I'm concerned about this arm twinge/leg wrap situation.
Really, I just want to see improvement from Adelaide here. In the past, he's achieved spectacularly well in the warm-up tournaments only to be disappointed in the AO.

On the other hand, of course, I want him to win every tournament he plays.

Let's go Lleyton!

But if he and Pim Pim meet it will be a dreadful wrench for me. On the other hand, I will be happy no matter who wins.

JJ and Lleyton are scheduled to meet in the SFs . . . I'd truly hate to see Lleyton lose to JJ in Australia, particularly . . .

Lleyton seems to always put so much pressure on himself when it comes to the AO. I don't know why, but I don't have a good feeling about this year's event.

C'mon, Lleyton!

Re: Second Tournament: Sydney 2005

I always worry and some of the variables are a bit sinister.

I am concerned from the look of him and the minor injuries that he may have overtrained a bit during the off season.

It's great that he works so hard, but it is possible to overdo it.

Bec Cartwright looks like a nice girl, but the new relationship - especially with an actor - can be a distraction.

On the other hand, better too much work than not enough, and he obviously hates to be alone, so maybe it's better that he's not on the market.

Typical Canadian fence-sitting here.

Also, Pim Pim's already won one Aus tournament, two is not necessary.
For some reason I think he'll have a really tough time against Greg Rusedski in the first round.

Re: Second Tournament: Sydney 2005

Rusedski really has something to prove, doesn't he? He was ****ed over by the ATP probably worse than any player in ATP history. He's never been one of my favorites, but on this issue, I'm on his side. Good luck to him against JJ!

Overall, I think that Lleyton is better off being in a new relationship than not. And Bec is starting to grow on me. I had the advantage of never having known about her or seeing her on television, I guess.

Yes, to your thoughts about his possibly overtraining. But a slightly built player like him really has no choice but to train hard, and the off-season is the only time he has in which to do it, unless he always want to take off the end of the year, as he did in 2003.

C'mon, Lleyton!

Re: Second Tournament: Sydney 2005

I am also worried for LLeyton because of variables " Bec Cartwright " and of his " new body ".
But I understand he wants to be happy off court also and he tries to have more power considering his body "slightly built" and the requirements of the modern tennis.
For the moment, I don't know to discuss more about his level because Adélaïde was not on the French TV. I can only have an opinion about his game through your posts and articles. But, I must admit, I am not the most optimist woman.
Despite all, He is a fighter so I try to have confidence on his warrior spirit and his determination to be the winner of AO.

y mi corazón entero entregarte
un segundo mas de vida para darte
y a tu lado para siempre yo quedarme
un segundo mas de vida
yo a Dios le pido..

Are you guys going to take bets as to how long the Bec-Lleyton relationship lasts?

C'mon, Lleyton!

Re: Second Tournament: Sydney 2005

Good points re training (Socket) and competitiveness (kimberlleyton)

I'll answer the dangerous question.

Even though it's a rebound relationship, I think the Bec/Lleyton alliance will last a long time (say at least six months) and more likely over a year.

I don't know how careerist she is, but as her last relationship was long term, she seems like a pro-monogamy type of gal. We all know that Ll never really breaks any relationship unless the other party acts first, so that gives more support for the idea that it will last.

I understand that its weird seeing him with someone other than Kim, but I think that this choice is less angst-producing than another tennis pro would have been. Locker room confrontation writers would be happy, but in rl it would have been very awkward.

So, er, put me down for a year plus.

Certainly not

I think the "rebound" thing takes on a slightly different complexion when the couple are also old friends. Still, it's going to be hard at the best of times with Bec having to stay in Aus to film and Lleyton only there at Christmas.

Sure, Jane, go ahead and take the moral high ground. It's not that unsavoury to wager on human relationships. Look at Dangerous Liaisons and how well that turned out. Oh wait....

I just watched Cruel Intentions again the other night actually.

It's immoral when you're as bad at betting as I am Plus I don't want to jinx them.

Re: Second Tournament: Sydney 2005

Hello there - this is my first post in the men's forum ever. I have just recently begun posting in the women's forum and have now decided to give it a try here.
I have been visiting Lleyton's forum religiously for a very long time and have always enjoyed reading all your posts. I am a big fan of both Lleyton and Kim and was, I guess a Lleyki like alot of you. When they broke up I was surprisingly less affected by it than I thought I would be. I still get more upset when I think about Kim's losses in her slam finals or Lleyton's losses against Federer. Go figure.
At this time I fall into that group of fans who are not overly impressed with Lleyton's off court behaviour and think that he is behaving slightly immaturely. While I have no problem whatsoever with him having a new girlfriend, I do question the way he has gone about the whole affair. To me it just seems so contrived and manipulated the way the whole relationship is being conducted, not only the whole posing for pics and the boat cruise incident. I mean, come on, there must have been other wildly romantic and public places he could have taken Bec on a date - hot air balloon ride comes to mind. I kind of questioned the whole 'they and their families having been friends since they were kids statement (If you have been friends for years why would you need to call the management company to ask for a phone number?).
Having said all that I am a big fan of his and will always support and wish and hope for the best for him. I don't think that I will ever be as interested in his new relationship(s) as I was in the L/K one although of course it has not stopped me from coming into this forum and checking out the LLeyton/Bec photos. I think it is more of a sick fascination kind of thing. I hope that, provided there is genuine affection between them, that Lleyton and Bec let their relationship develop at a natural and also more private pace.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the Australian season is over and the tour moves to Europe and the US. I have always thought that Lleyton is two different persons. When he is in his comfort zone (speak Australia) he is self confident and at ease with himself and his environment. I feel when he is abroad he is the total opposite,. For the last few years he has had Kim to smooth the way (my impression) and as she once mentioned, 'take him by the hand'. He has also, arguably, been the beneficiary of a lot of free goodwill ,solely because of Kim pretty much mentioning him and how great he was in every interview and press conference that she ever gave. She was probably the best PR person he ever had and possibly will ever have. Going forward LLeyton is going to have to generate his own good press abroad. Not sure how helpful Bec is going to be there. Unless of course she learns to play tennis quickly, joins the WTA tour and is then able to give press conferences wherein she mentions Lleyton constantly.
I am so happy that the tennis season has started again and that we can now shift some focus onto his athletic achievements. A little balance between his on court and off court activities is probably a good thing. I cannot wait for the Australian Open to begin.

Glad you posted.

I think I have a higher opinion of Lleyton than you.

I've never really cared what other people think of him. I've got my opinion and I think I'm right. I've not got the impression that Lleyton is overly concerned about the people who don't like him either. He's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but to me he's shown for years and years what a fine person he is.
