No Feli (or Fer) for DC finale *sigh*

Spain have named an unchanged team for the Davis Cup final against the United States in Seville on 3-5 December.

Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo will take on the US in front of 22,000 fans at the converted Olympic stadium.

It is the same team that defeated Franbce 4-1 in the semi-finals.

Moya and the struggling Ferrero are likely to play the singles rubbers, with Nadal and Robredo continuing their doubles partnership.

Spain won the Davis Cup in 2000 and reached the final last year, when they lost to Australia in Melbourne.

DAVID FERRER - FERNANDO VERDASCO - RAFAEL NADAL - FELICIANO LOPEZ - ALEX CORRETJA - TOMMY HAAS - GASTON GAUDIO -MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS - TAYLOR DENT

I really hope Nadal and Robredo will do their best doubles match and we won't be sorry that Feli and Nando weren't there instead....their time will come...but all the luck to the spanish team, may the cup stays home boys!!!

Re: No Feli (or Fer) for DC finale *sigh*

Yeah, here's an article about it if you're interested...I've translated it for you down the bottom...

quién vaya a venir", sentenció.

Ferrero, Moyà, Nadal and Robredo will play the final

Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moyà, Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo will make up the Spanish team that will play the Davis Cup final against the USA between the 3-5 December in the La Cartuja stadium in Seville, which is the same team (chosen by the G3: Juan Bautista Avedaño, Josep Perlas and Jordi Arrese) that beat France in the semis (4-1) and Holland in the previous quarter final tie (4-1).

"It's the best team for the final", said Avedaño in a press conference along with the president of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, Agustín Pujol, during which it was also announced that Feliciano López and Fernando Verdasco had been invited to attend as reserve players (hmpf!!).

Besides that, Guillermo García, Ferrero's training partner could do the sparring for the team to prepare for the final. The players are due to arrive in Seville on Friday the 26th.

Avedaño, spokesperson for the technical body, as well as Arrese and Perlas are optimistic of Spain's chances of winning against the USA, "despite the fact that the end of the year hasn't been very good for our players" admitted Avedaño, he also pointed out that the final, at home and on clay, would be "nothing like the way they have been playing recently" and that Spain is the favourite.

"We're playing on clay at home and in front of about 23 000 fans and with a team that hasn't lost in 11 ties (not sure what he means by that?!). We've got everything going for us and we are the favourites, without meaning to underestimate anyone" underlined Avedaño, who mentioned the players' "incredible desire", especially Moyà's, since he was absent in the final in 2000 in Barcelona which gave Spain its one and only Davis Cup title.

For Jordi Arrese, it doesn't matter who their opponents are. "The most important thing is that our guys are at their best because they're the best on clay and, with all due respect, we shouldn't have to worry at all about who's coming (from the US team)"

DAMN!
Anyways, good luck for the Spanish team tho in my opinion it is not the strongest team Jordi Arrese could make.

I suck at TT so there's no reason to brag with my 1st round exits :retard:

Re: No Feli (or Fer) for DC finale *sigh*

a little snippet of DC news: (English at bottom)

"We've decided that Feliciano López and Fernando Verdasco should come too" said Avedaño, one of the members of the trio of captains, the other 2 being Josep Perlas and Jordi Arrese

"We want them to be in Seville too so in case of a mishap, they can be the reserves"

Well surely they got to have them, you never know what may happen, someone gets injured etc, I dont wish nothing alike to anyone, I just hope they will win the cup and Feli and Nando might happen to be the luckiest - joining the fiesta for free! hehehe

Re: No Feli (or Fer) for DC finale *sigh*

I'm a little biased here (big fan of Robredo and Nadal).. but why would Lopez and Verdasco have been a better option at this point? I recognize that they are both very good singles players who will only get better, and that they form a very effective doubles pairing (so it seems - I haven't actually seen them play) - but can the same not be said for Nadal and Robredo?

Robredo just finished off his best year - his head to head against Roddick aside, I can't see a good reason to leave him off in favour of somebody else. I realize that Nadal is lower ranked than either Lopez or Verdasco, but he's been on the team all year and he's performed for them by finishing off two ties (against Team Novak/ Stepanek and France). Nadal is only ranked so low because of his injury during the clay season.

Or is it that you look at Ferrero's horrible year and think that maybe one of them deserve to make it over him? I can sort of see a point there, but given his history (in DC and on clay), I don't think that leaving him off the team was really an option.

Regardless, I'm not trying to cause a fight here or what have you. I like Lopez and Verdasco, even if they aren't my favourite Spaniards. I'm just curious why some of you are so upset about it and am trying to see the other side so that I can understand better.

Thanks

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Re: No Feli (or Fer) for DC finale *sigh*

it was more from the doubles point of view than the singles. since Rafa and Tommy haven't done THAT much better than Feli and Nando...admittedly Nabredo won the doubles in the tie against France but in the other 2 ties, they lost. Both Nabredo and Feli/Nando have won titles this year and at the US Open Nabredo got to the semis and Feli/Nando got to the quarters, both pairs losing to Paes/Rikl so they're quite even...and in fact Feli/Nando are probably in better physical shape than Nabredo. That's just why some people here were a bit peeved lol. I don't mind either way really.
