The best match I attended was way back in 1979 at the American Airlines Tournament in Rancho Mirage (predecessor to Pacific Life). John McEnroe faced off against Eliot Teltscher in a quarterfinal match. McEnroe had just won the Masters against Arthur Ashe and was competing for the number one ranking. McEnroe made the mistake in this match by approaching on Teltscher's one handed backhand, which was one of the best in the game at the time. Mac got passed time and time again. Teltscher eventually one 6-7 7-5 7-6. It was quite an upset.
McEnroe blamed the breezy conditions on his loss so much that he didn't appear in any of the tournaments in the Coachella Valley until 1991, when Operation Desert Storm compelled him to take a wildcard at the time in the comfort of home.
Anything even on the satellite/chanllenger circuit that finished 7-6 in the 3rd.

first round match of the 1981 us open between john mcenroe and juan nunez. nunez took a set from mac to make it interesting but the best part of this match was my progression from the upper deck seats to courtside box seats.
it rained so intermittently that day that rich people who had better things to do apparently left the grounds to do better things, making the ushers do constant battle against the likes of me from illegally claiming better seats. at some point the ushers came to their senses and just let us be. and what a treat that was. mcenroe cursing under his breath at his agitators sitting courtside (a bunch of giggly schoolgirls) -- priceless.
