Johan Kriek classic interview, (great read)

I didn't know much about Johan Kriek, the two time Australian Open winner, he was from the earlier era of McEnroe and Borg but this is a very enjoyable and insightful read. Some funny stories here...

enjoy...

Yeah great read.

Nice to see a tennis player, coming from the land. A true Afrikaner. Can someone explain to me why he asked for US citizenship? He doesn't explain it clearly in the itw?

Funny article about Johan Kriek can be found here: http://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Ar...1011.2.73.aspx

Yep, great read.
Like many South Africans in the '80s, Kriek applied for US citizenship because of many countries' views towards SA then.

Many of our players were not exactly welcomed by tournament directors, and were seldom given wildcards, so applying for US citizenship made their lives easier all round. Kevin Curren was another top player who followed that route.

Thank you. I know about Curren's case, as well. Quite frankly, I suspected the reason was political but did not know, for sure.

I remember having read that Lendl had trouble with the Czech federation after he played an exo in your country.

Yes, I was quite young at the time, but seem to remember he played the exo against Connors in '83. Then again, Ivan often had trouble with the Czech fed in those days...
Apart from the money, obv another reason why he ended up in Connecticut, not Prague.
You ever see Lendl play live?

Kriek lives in Virginia now, he is on facebook pretty regularly, pretty cool and very down to earth guy too.

I remember the last few years of Johan's career. At that late stage, he was always a threat to win a set against anyone. He was totally on, or totally off. I also remember when he made the SF of RG in 1986 (I think). He basically gave the match away (to Lendl, I think). It's a shame since who knows what could have happened. In his prime, he should have been ranked higher.
