The 1988 draw is on Wiki (4-man at that time): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_exhibitions_in_1988

In 1989 there has been a McEnroe-Wilander encounter but I don't know more about it.
Doubles Final: McEnroe/Woodforde def. Lendl/Wilander 7/6 6/2 (no idea about the exact date)

1990 (Jan. 11-14) Final: McEnroe def. Edberg 4/6 7/6 6/4

And I've just found out an interesting event at Wirral, 1988 & 1989. It was an event that hadn't been held since 1972. In 1989, McEnroe was beaten at the 2nd round by Jim Pughs. Becker won it on June 24 beating Peter Lundgren in the final 7/5 6/4. At the same time, Lendl played an exhibition in Wentworth where he was beaten by Jonas Svensson.

In 1988, McEnroe made it to the semi-finals and lost to Van Rensburg. David Pate and Leif Shiras were the other two semi-finalists. Chesnokov lost in the quarters to Van Rensburg. Andres Gomez and Johan Kriek also played.

in regards to the 1989 rio international challenge played in adelaide there was no doubles final.

that mac/woodforde v lendl/wilander match was just thrown together at the last minute because pat cash had to forfeit the singles final to stefan edberg earlier on the same evening.
so basically tornament organisers just wanted to give the fans something to watch and organised that doubles match.

the mcenroe-wilander round robin match played earlier in the tornament finished 64 63 to mac.

i have both of the above mentioned matches on dvd and also another of the round robin matches between lendl and mark woodforde.
unfortunetly that match is missing the end with lendl up 64 43.
if anyone could help me out with the final scoreline of that one it'd be much appreciated.

btw prior to 1987 this event was played indoors in canberra usually around november.

great,thanks for that.

i'll add some of the results for the 1985 rio international challenge played indoors in canberra sometime in november.
got these results from old newspaper articles i kept as a kid.

round robin matches:

lendl d nystroem 64 64
kriek d mayotte 63 67 64
lendl d kriek 63 63
mayotte d wilander 76 63

apparently kriek was filling in for the injured kevin curren.
by memory lendl beat mayotte in the final.

PEPSI GRAND SLAM

held at Boca Raton on green-clay in years 1976-81 is recognized by the ATP as the official tournament, however the status was invitational, so I decided to include all scorelines to the thread.
The Grand Slam champions and 'Masters' champion of the preceding year were took into consideration as invited players (Masters champion over Aussie Open champion; sixth tournament which was took into consideration - the Italian Open in Rome)...

1976, July

Code:
Semifinals:
Ilie Nastase d. Jimmy Connors * 0-6 6-4 7-5
Manuel Orantes d. Arthur Ashe 6-4 6-4
3rd place match:
Jimmy Connors d. Arthur Ashe 6-4 7-6(7)
Final:
Ilie Nastase d. Manuel Orantes 6-4 6-3
* I'm not sure why Borg didn't play (he should have played as the French Open '75 champion; maybe organizers decided to put Connors instead, as a 3-time runner-up in 1975?)

1977, January

Code:
Semifinals:
Jimmy Connors d. Manuel Orantes 6-7 6-2 5-5 ret. - 1 mp
Bjorn Borg d. Adriano Panatta 6-2 4-6 7-5 - 3 mp
3rd place match:
Manuel Orantes d. Adriano Panatta 6-7 6-2 6-2
Final:
Bjorn Borg d. Jimmy Connors 6-4 5-7 6-3
1978, January

Code:
Semifinals:
Bjorn Borg d. Brian Gottfried * 6-2 6-4
Jimmy Connors d. Vitas Gerulaitis 6-2 6-4
3rd place match:
Brian Gottfried d. Vitas Gerulaitis 6-3 6-3
Final:
Bjorn Borg d. Jimmy Connors 7-6(1) 3-6 6-1
* Gottfried replaced Vilas

1979, February

Code:
Semifinals:
Bjorn Borg d. Guillermo Vilas 6-3 6-3
Jimmy Connors d. John McEnroe 6-3 6-4
3rd place match:
John McEnroe d. Guillermo Vilas 6-4 6-2
Final:
Bjorn Borg d. Jimmy Connors 6-2 6-3
1980, February

Code:
Semifinals:
Bjorn Borg d. Guillermo Vilas 6-2 6-3
Vitas Gerulaitis d. John McEnroe 7-6 6-3
3rd place match:
John McEnroe d. Guillermo Vilas 8-7(5)
Final:
Bjorn Borg d. Vitas Gerulaitis 6-1 5-7 6-1
1981, February

Code:
Semifinals:
John McEnroe d. Brian Teacher 6-3 6-1
Guillermo Vilas d. Vitas Gerulaitis 6-3 2-6 6-4
3rd place match:
Brian Teacher d. Tim Gullikson * 6-2 6-7 6-0
Final:
John McEnroe d. Guillermo Vilas 6-7(5) 6-4 6-0

* In the 3rd-place match Gullikson replaced Gerulaitis (he'd replaced Borg), who got the prize money for the 4th place. Gullikson could have received $5.000 if he'd beaten Teacher.

Perhaps these were not sanctioned ATP tournaments, but glorified exhibitions?

Re: The Invitational Event Thread

I remember special invitational tournament in Beckenham (GBR). It was each year on Grasscourts during 2nd week of French Open, as a kind of Wimbledon preparation (not part of ATP calendar). It was played until 1996 - according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_Championships
but the draw was more than 8 players ...
