I love Kafelnikov. One of the best all round tennis players in recent times.

He is like the only World No. 1 not to win a TMS/Super 9. Funny thing when he got to No. 1, he went on a losing streak in the clay season and lost it. You forgot about the 2002 Davis Cup.

He be in the World Tennis Hall of Fame if Rafter is inducted.

I don't know.

Rafter is in it, Kafelnikov was better than Rafter.

Kafelnikov's backhand, especially down the line, was just awesome.

Re: +··+Yevgeny Kafelnikov thread+··`+

Yes, wonderful backhand, but too unconsistent to be remembered among the greatest. Anyway I agree he should be inducted into the Hall, if they consider Michael Chang eligible...

Re: +··+Yevgeny Kafelnikov thread+··`+

Kafelnikov's achievements are definately enough to get him into the hall of fame:
- 2 grand slam titles, at Roland Garros in 1996, and the Australian Open in 1999
- Spent 6 weeks at world no.1, 214 weeks in the top 5, and 390 weeks in the top 10
- Reached the quarter-final stage at all 4 grand slams
- Olympic gold medalist at Sydney in 2000
- Davis Cup champion in 2002
- 26 ATP Titles

The first match I saw of him live was when he beat Michael Stich in 1993 in Lyon (he was ranked around 100 at that time and pretty well unknown though he already beat Stich earlier in the season in Barcelona).
I was pretty impressed at that time with that guy and I knew there that he would be a great champion. In 1996, he easily won the French Open against ... Michael Stich

More that 14 years later, I still remember this was a great match. I was also attending his 1996 final in Lyon when he beat Arnaud Boetsch in a tough match.

Yevgeny was my second favourite player behind Kucera when I growing up and watching tennis. He was good to watch, a nice all-court player.

Re: +··+Yevgeny Kafelnikov thread+··`+

I wonder if he would be included into poker hall of fame as well. And looking at his shape after finishing the career, I must say that he probably lives a life that's full - http://www.nycdiet.com/nycdiet/images/yevgeny1.jpg

No seriously, Kafelnikov - Kalashnikov was really fun to watch, modern player with all-court, attacking tennis.
