Monday OOP/Revised Draw/Scores and Results

Monday, August 23, 2004 // Round 1

Center Court - Starts at 4 p.m.
Jan Michael Gambill (USA) vs. Richard Gasquet (FRA)
Julien Benneteau (FRA) vs. Thomas Enqvist (SWE)

Not before 7:00 PM
(WC) Todd Martin (USA) vs. (10)Jurgen Melzer (AUT)
(5)Juan Ignacio Chela (ARG) vs. Karol Beck (SVK)

Grandstand - Starts at 4 p.m.
David Sanchez (ESP) vs Wayne Ferreira (RSA)
Alberto Martin (ESP) vs (8)Fernando Verdasco (ESP)
Sargis Sargsian (ARM) vs Michael Llodra (FRA)
Doubles:
Kerr/Merklein vs (4)Aspelin/Perry

Court 4 - Starts at 5 p.m.
Doubles:
Andreev/Ferrer vs (2)Pala/Vizner

And here's the revised draw. Since two seeds withdrew, two players had to be moved to replace them and the lucky losers added in. I can't believe Ancic is still planning to play here, but he's young so I guess he has the energy.

Horna, Luis (moved to replace Agassi)
(Q) Popp, Alexander

Jarkko Nieminen
(wc)Robby Ginepri

(Q) Hippensteel, KJ
Nikolay Davydenko

Alberto Martín
(8)Fernando Verdasco

(4)Paradorn Srichaphan
(Q) Kevin Kim (replaces Irakli Labadze)

David Sánchez
Wayne Ferreira

David Ferrer
(Q) Stefan Koubek

(LL) Daniel Elsner (Jürgen Melzer moved to replace Massu)
(7) Joachim Johansson

(6) Mario Ancic
Dmitry Tursunov

Jan-Michael Gambill
(LL) Richard Gasquet

Igor Andreev
Albert Costa

(WC) Todd Martin
(10) Jurgen Melzer (replaces Nicolás Massú)

(5) Juan Ignacio Chela
Karol Beck

Julien Benneteau
Thomas Enqvist

Sargis Sargsian
Michaël Llodra

(LL) Olivier Mutis
(2)(wc) Lleyton Hewitt

Best twitter posts of the epic match:

@dougrobson - Whoever is supplying Mahut with hair gel needs to ink a sponsorship deal now.

@Wimbledon - FYI, with @Wimbledon live scoring devices, please add 50 to the games in the fifth set of the Isner v Mahut match.

@HolterMedia - Nice to see that a three-day test has come to tennis here @wimbledon.

Re: Monday OOP/Revised Draw/Scores and Results

Agassi withdraws from Hamlet

BY JEFF WILLIAMS
STAFF WRITER

August 23, 2004

Despite a contribution to his foundation and an appearance fee guarantee, Andre Agassi yesterday told the TD Waterhouse Cup that he was too fatigued to play in this year's tournament. Agassi called the tournament office yesterday morning and withdrew, telling officials that because he had won in Cincinnati, then followed up this weekend with a semifinal finish in Washington, he was feeling too tired and needed the week off before the U.S. Open.

His withdrawal was a blow to the tournament at the Hamlet Golf and Country Club in Commack, which also lost Olympic gold medalist Nicolas Massu. In a statement, Agassi said: "While I had hoped to play next week, my results in the last two ATP tournaments have caused fatigue and forced me to re-evaluate my schedule as the U.S. Open approaches."

Agassi would have been the No. 1 seed and No. 1 draw. On Friday, the tournament managed to entice Lleyton Hewitt, the former U.S. Open and Wimbledon champ, with a wild-card berth. He will become the No. 1 seed. Hewitt, who won the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington yesterday, confirmed he will be coming to Long Island.

"I'm extremely disappointed that Andre withdrew," said Elliot Monter, president of the Holiday Organization and owner of the TD Waterhouse Cup. "I'm not so much disappointed for us, but for the fans that won't get a chance to see him. That's who he has disappointed."

The tournament begins today at 4 p.m. The feature match will be Todd Martin, also given a wild card, against Jurgen Melzer of Austria, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The opening match will pit Jan-Michael Gambill against qualifier Richard Gasquet. Also withdrawing yesterday was Iraki Labadze, citing personal reasons. Hewitt and two-time defending champion Paradorn Srichaphan will play their opening matches tomorrow.

Re: Monday OOP/Revised Draw/Scores and Results

The tournament director sounds like a real jerk...crying over Agassi withdrawing. If Andre wanted to, he could collect his appearance fee and tank his match to Popp. Instead, Andre was classy enough to pull out when he knew he couldn't give his best. Taking potshots at one of the great legends of the game isn't a very good way to advertise your tournament.
