Q. Sounds like you're not playing Monte-Carlo. How does that happen?
JAMES BLAKE: Well, for me it's something that doesn't quite fit into the schedule. It's going to be real tough to go from Houston all the way over to Monte-Carlo, then come back just for a week or two to train for Rome.
For the Americans, that tournament has never been exactly the easiest one in the schedule. I'm not going to be able to make it to that one.

Q. Any sanctions for not doing that, because it's a mandatory event?
JAMES BLAKE: Well, I think I'll get a zero pointer. I'll lose my chance to get points there. I believe there's a way that you're allowed to miss one and not get fined. This will be the one I miss.

What's the rule if he pulls up injured for a future masters event? He'll need a few doctor's notes to avoid the fine, right?

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

I don't know off the top of my head, but yea I believe he'd need a medical excuse to avoid a fine.

here's the rulebook http://www.atptennis.com/en/common/T...lebook2007.pdf I tried to look it up but as usual adobe locked up my computer and i don't feel like staying up to mess with it right now

Re: Why is Lleyton not playing in Monteo Carlo?

What's Blake's problem? Surely Monte Carlo would fit his schedule if he would take the clay season seriously. Why would he have to go back home between Monte Carlo and Rome? I suppose he could stay in Europe and practise.

I'm sick of hearing this "it's a difficult tournament for the Americans". There are so many players who don't have a single tournament played in their home country. But you don't hear the complaining and missing the big events.

Finally, was the Houston absolutely necessary tournament to play...

Hes American so its nice to see him play in his home tournaments. Im sure you would be singing a different tune if Nieminen missed Cincinnati because he was playing in a trounament in Finland the week before.

Clay doesn't take James Blake seriously, so in that respect it's no surprise he doesn't take clay seriously.
