James Ward (GBR) never even played challenger - playing Valencia?

Can someone explain this?

In his career has played:
0 ATP tournaments
0 Challenger tournaments
14 Futures tournaments - with 1 semi final to show for it Oct 06.

Ranking 851 (highest it has been)
Aged 20

But he has a WC for Valencia. I know it doesn't have the best field but he hasn't even been given a Wimbledon, Nottingham or Queens WC and you know how generous we have been to british players with a low ranking.

Can you buy a WC into an ATP tournament or am I being completely thick and missing something?

Is this another Brit that's been sent over to Spain?
Andy Murray was given a WC for Barcelona two years ago although, at the time, he was ranked around 300 or so.

James Ward is training for some years now in the Juan Carlos Ferrero Academy in Spain. He is quite promising and just raises his level slowly but surely, mostly in the spanish circuit.

As i guess JCF has a good relationship to the tournament organizers there in Valencia a WC for James Ward is just a logical consequence.

Here a link also with a picture of James Ward

Re: James Ward (GBR) never even played challenger - playing Valencia?

I think I read somewhere at the time that Andy Murray was given the wild card at Barcelona, that there was an agreement between the spanish and british federations or governing bodies, about wild card for youngters from each country. However, I may be wrong about the applicability of that to this case. maybe some more knowledgable poster could enlighten us.

OMG
Is it possible? Ranked 850 and has 1 future SF to show? :retard: Why not one challenger before this? Now really, this is a bit too much

And it can be a very bad day for him tommorow...

Lucky draw for him then, although he probably will still go out. If he wins this match who will he play next round do you know?

Re: James Ward (GBR) never even played challenger - playing Valencia?

Well good luck to him I hope he can make something of the opportunity.

Murray was ranked 397 at Barcelona but had won several future events and challenger matches. He went on to make the Bangkok final, win challengers and beat top 20 players in 2005. Hopefully James can do the same. Help solve the Davis cup issues.

Re: James Ward (GBR) never even played challenger - playing Valencia?

i think he even has a chance of qualifying, his opponent has been futures material so far as well and maybe got tired from the long match of today\

if he wins plays Ferrer or Bracciali
