Monfils future?

There is no question Gael has massive potential, with tons of speed, mixed in with tons of power. Most would say his potential is much greater than other young guns. The question is when he will get his game going again. He just hired his coach from juniors prior to his win at the Challenger event in Sunrise. I love watching this guy play and hope he gets going in the upcoming clay court season, probably his best surface. Any thoughts, other than just ripping Gael?

Tim Henman--Gael Monfils--James Blake--Donald Young--Rafael Nadal--Jo-Wilfried Tsonga--John Isner--Janko Tipsarevic--Richard Gasquet.

Re: Monfils future?

Indeed. Change the word "most" for "few" and we might be closer to the truth.

I've nothing against Monfils but he has a lot of work to do right now and I hope his new coach can help him get down to it - he's going backwards at the moment.

the problem is that to have speed and power doesn t necessarly mean you'll be a great TENNIS player.....it's not athletism we are talking about there.

Re: Monfils future?

so true. sheer athletism works on women's tour (see Williams sisters), but on the men's there are a lot of guys who can handle players like that.

Re: Monfils future?

Monfils can be a top 20, top 30 player, perhaps a bit higher. But he needs to change his tactics and how he approaches the game. The way he plays right now - big serve and then hang WAAAY back and attempt to outlast the opponent - it's not going to get it done. Roddick couldn't get it done like that, and, forgive me, he's a better player. Monfils won't either. He needs better strategy and he needs to stop sliding on a hardcourt before he does his ankles permanent damage.
