How to make tennis instantly popular

The discussion about poor (US) television coverage of tennis and the decline of the popularity of tennis (in the US) got me thinking. How could the USTA make the sport more popular?

The answer quickly became obvious.

Federer simply needs to become a US citizen. For the good of the game, I think he really should be forced. I mean, look at other sports. Anybody who is any good quickly comes to the US and becomes a citizen (of course, soccer is an exception and in hockey, they can become Canadinan citizens as well (same thing)). In the US, we don't watch anything where we are not the best.

A sort of related example is golf. Pre-Tiger golf was not so popular here in the US and TV coverage was nowhere near what it is today. Post-Tiger golf is huge. People love to watch golf on TV and the courses are filled with beer swilling, foul-mouthed, idiots who simply want to hit a drive as far as possible. A vast improvement. If Federer becomes a US citizen, tennis could be transformed in a like manner.

The fact that Federer won't become a US citizen just shows once again what a selfish, egotistical person he really is. Surely he can understand that the US must be the best at everything and we are quick to adopt champions and claim them as our own.

I think Nadal should become a US citizen too. He has the kind of personality and playing style that Americans love.

After these guys become US citizens, then we can decide how to change the rules to favor Americans. With that done, I think we would pretty much solve all problems tennis is now facing.

What do you all think? I think my idea can't miss.

My schedule tells me there's a big event happening this week but the posts are like it's the deepest void in the middle of the off-season.

It's extremely confusing.

Well it's no Djoke, the UK tried enlisting Djokovic as a citizen for related reasons.

Ahem. His family approached the Home Office, not the other way around. I was against the whole idea, personally.

great that you didn't put any smilies in it, that would've destroyed much of the irony.

You aren't being SERIOUS, are you?

IF you are - the US of A is NOT the Center of the Universe. Tennis can manage very well without being US-centered.
Please do your countrymen a favour and don't post such nonsense.

Am I still alive? I'm still f*cking ... Here...!"

Brits can only dream of someone as good as Nole

And if you believe that story about Home Office then I have some nuclear bombs in Baghdad to sell to you

Aha. Two separate ideas making the rounds in the media then. My source said explicitly they courted him (more for DC reasons not tennis popularity, although I guess the two tie in) and he turned it down.

I'll have to do some investigations.

Btw, before I hunt down my sources, what would be his reason to move from SRB? Did he need to get out of military service or something? They have supported him all along.

Not the center of the Universe? How can you say that.

Look Federer is from Switzerland, right (or one of those small, insignificant European countries)? I mean, how many Americans can even find it on a map. Probably not 1 in 10.

So how can we cheer for him.

i also heard it the other way around, the home office approaching djokovic because of his ties with murray.

i guess you're confusing it with ivanovic on the women's tour, who tried to play for switzerland but was turned down.
