Re: Willy saves Willy

That's one of those beautiful little ironies that will make for a great tennis trivia question in the future, plus the fact that he's probably the first ever lucky loser to defeat a world no. 1. On reflection one of T.S. Eliot's more famous lines comes to mind... pity really.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Even more interesting, the list of players who took a set of off Federer during that streak (quite an odd list!):

Blake
Roddick
Suzuki
Srichipan
Nalbandian
Roddick (again!)
Pless (WTF? )

The most happy is Vilas for sure

Roger will have more chances to break the record

Toronto 2002 was the best tournament for Canas. In the final he beat Roddick 6-4,7-5.

just to clarify: thomas muster lost to sandon stolle (lucky loser) in dubai 1996 and it was his first week at #1. so canas is not the first

Thanks for the info. For a moment I started to believe that Fed had actually a record on his sleeve that he surely hasn't been chasing for.

Am I still here? As one, with The Fear?
Am I still alive? I'm still f*cking ... Here...!"

Re: Willy saves Willy (Federer's 41-match winning streak)

Another MS = Another Cañas victory over FedEx

Cañas def. Federer 7-6(2) 2-6 7-6(5)
Willy "the greatest claycourter ever" () Cañas beats back-to-back on the hardcourts Federer (three times Indian Wells champion, two times Miami champion) Nice choke by Rogi - wasted 4 BP's at 2:0 in the 3rd and mini-match point at 5:5. H2H in tight sets between these two: Cañas 5-0
The funny thing: Cañas in Miami played his first ATP qualifying-tournament outside South America (lost in the 1st round qualy to Ram 1-2 in 1996) and in Miami '98 won his 1st Masters Series match (Reneberg 2-0).

Canas - the only man beside Nadal who beat Federer at least twice in a row since Roger is No. 1
