in your opinion, rafa's ranking by the end of the year will be...

i think his ranking will drastically drop if he fails to defend the 3 big ones he won last year: MC, Rome, and FO.

plus, if he fails to repeat his lucky run in wimby this year, he'll lose more points again.

on the upside though, the latter part of the season last year was so terrible for him that this year, he can only look forward to the fact that he doesn't have much points to defend during that time...

2. I still think he's the second best player - he's just having a bit of a slump. I may change my mind if he still stinks the place up in the next 6 weeks, but I still think he's only slumping just now and will snap out of it.

It should be a good race for second though this year - the other guys must be feeling good about their chances of taking it off him so I think it would be close.

Novak Djokovic ~ Juan Martin Del Potro ~ Paul Henri Mathieu ~ Rafael Nadal ~ Tomas Berdych ~ Stanislas Wawrinka ~ Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ~ Richard Gasquet

2nd, as always... what's the issue?? He is the BEST player in clay with only Federer as a competitor. In the rest of the surfaces available, considering results, he is still top 5. So, what has changed??

No way is he top 5 on other surfaces, but he will still comfortably finish in the top 2 because he will defend most of his clay points.

5 or 6.

He won't go as far in Wimbledon, and I doubt it he'll have another perfect clay season.

my sentiments exactly. a lot of ppl are thinking that come clay season, rafa wil redeem himself...

i personally think that that won't be the case... he might win barcelona or 1 TMS on clay . my guess is probably hamburg because fed won't enter there since fed will win MC and Rome

MrJ, I didn't believe it too as first, but it's true. Without considering clay tournaments, the 2006 ranking is something like this:

1) Federer
2) Blake
3) Roddick
4) Nadal
5) Davydenko

you can check it yourself if you want.

Take out Wimbledon and he would not be in the top 10. Im sorry but a player who has not even reached a final (outside of Wimbledon) for a whole year cannot be considered in the top 5.

let's not get started on roddick... that's one player in the top 5 who doesn't deserve to be there...

Re: in your opinion, rafa's ranking by the end of the year will be...

so why can't we take out the 5 ATP in which Blake defeated nothing, or the Roddick and Daydenko's TMS in the same conditions, for example?

Without Wimbledon Nadal still has 1670 pts, so he'd be like 8th (Ljubicic and probablye Baghdatis would pass him).

Depends if a few players like Roddick and Haas can keep up Davydenko has been kind of slipping.

So Nadal will be top 5, clay season will save him.

I think this year it could kind of be up in the air. It's still early in the year and we'll have to see what happens.

I don't see Nadal losing the no. 2 spot. Even if Nadal doesn't win each tournament on clay, he should win enough to secure his spot. I think the only player that has a chance of overtaking Nadal is Roddick, but that would require Nadal's level dropping significantly on clay and Roddick staying focused and winning the matches he should not be losing. Also, if Nadal has a solid ending of the year, his ranking should be secure.
