Fastest shot you've seen?

In other words, the biggest forehand or backhand you have seen by the speed of it. Two that come to mind for me are the James Blake forehand return winner in the 06 AO of 130mph, and a 120mph forehand winner by Monfils at this years' AO. There is a video of the Monfils shot on youtube. Why doesn't Gael do that more often?

Tim Henman--Gael Monfils--James Blake--Donald Young--Rafael Nadal--Jo-Wilfried Tsonga--John Isner--Janko Tipsarevic--Richard Gasquet.

The fastest shot you'll ever see is the one that happens when Anna Kournikova steps within 20 feet of a man.

Re: Fastest shot you've seen?

The fastest shot I've ever seen (I can't tell you anyhing about mph) made Krajicek at French Open 1993 in the semifinal. After Courier's huge first serve, Krajicek who was losing 0-40, hit forehand winner on the opponent's baseline nearly to feet of American who didn't be in time. Everybody in the stadium were laughing including Courier who showed how long was the mark of the ball on the baseline Krajicek with the shot expressed his frustration because he has been losing that match.

He tries to do it more often, but for every winner of that kind he hits 10 UEs.

Andy Roddick's 151mph serve at Davis Cup in 2005 or whatever.

Re: Fastest shot you've seen?

Roddick Wimbledon 2004 Forehand winner : 104 mph
Gonzalez Wimbledon 2005 Forehand winner: 106 mph
Safin Roland Garros 2004 Backhand winner: 102 mph

I know Monfils has hit harder than this but I am not sure of the exact speed. There is no way a backhand or Forehand can be something like 120-130 mph therefore for the Blake forehand it's probably the speed of the serve he returned. Same thing with Sharapova supposedly hitting a 120 mph Forehand Winner when 120 mph was the speed of Serena's serve.

That is what I thought as well. I was thinking anything around 100 is pretty fast. When Fed hits 80-ish MPH winners they are pretty crushing blows.

When you think about it, have you ever seen a groundstroke that you really thought was as fast or faster than a serve? Given the nature of the strokes, it hardly seems possible.

I suppose if you measured the speed of overhead smashes at the net, you would get some pretty fast strokes. But, that is not what the poster is asking.

Re: Fastest shot you've seen?

Wikpedia says Monfils at AO 2007 hit the fastest recorded forehand at 190 km/h forehand (118 MPH).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forehand

This site says the shot was 198 km/h

The story on the above site is about halfway down the page in the short article titled "The Aussie Files with..."
