RECORD for SLAM titles won without having to play a 5th set: Nadal adds to total

Conventional wisdom says that if you want to win a slam, you have to win 5 set matches. For example, Sampras, Borg, Connors, Agassi, Edberg, Becker, and Wilander have 60 slam titles between them. 40 of those titles were won while having to play a 5 set match somewhere along the line. Federer seems to be an exception along with Nadal so far.

I suppose the most surprising is how many sets Sampras lost per grand slam win. Incredible figures by Rosewell who won his 8 grand slams either side of his 12 year exclusion in the middle of his career owing to being a professional. Borg conceded a lot of sets considering 3 of his 11 grand slams were won without losing a set. How many US Open / Australian Open matches were best of three sets if any.

Few in there for Wilander, Edberg, the late 70's/early 80's AO winners like Teacher, etc. Borg also had some two set wins in slams along with Connors and the other earlier players.

Re: RECORD for SLAM titles won without having to play a 5th set

There is another interesting statistic, which is number of slam finals in which the player was taken to a fifth.

I believe Federer, Hewitt, Roddick and Nadal have never been in the fifth set in a Slam Final. Many of the others have, but particularly if you look at multiple slam winners.

Err, I know. That's why I suggested them, since your list was about slam victories without having to play a fifth set, and those tournaments were missing from the list.
