Re: Are there a thing called bagel boys?

The great Josh Olivas who I have had the honor of seeing in person. Should be playing USTA local leagues.

A kid named Carlton Fiorentino is another great example, his dad bought an entire Challenger tournament in Florida and of course gave him a WC, that is crazy

Re: Are there a thing called bagel boys?

I have seen Brie Whitehead!!!

At the Surbiton grass event last summer.

Her big win there was over Bobby Reynolds.

In her first round qualie match, her first service game consisted of 8 serves that ended up going lower and lower into the net until the final one barely reached the net. I kid you not.

I got back just in time to watch her final service game. This time all 8 of her serves kept going longer and longer until she might have missed the base line with one. All the while she prepares for her service motion with the studied care of a sumo wrestler.

But she sure is cute. If I made an approach to her, I'd be arrested, no doubt about it.

But to answer the original question : a few years back I narrowly missed out on the winning the title for the greatest number of double bagels suffered in a season. All because of my opponent in 2 of my matches that year gifted me a game on my serve (and also generously conceded a service ace that was mistakenly called out from the chair.

But once again there's a world of difference in standard of play between guys getting double bagelled and the girls suffering the same fate. Though I have not seen Josh Olivas "play".

Here's an interesting factoid : up until this year, women received ranking points just from playing first round qualies. So someone like Brie just had to travel to North Africa and the back of beyond to to get a ranking.

Seriously...these are the kinds of threads I find fascinating. We never hear about this kind of stuff on ESPN2. I had no idea it was even possible for a person to purchase a tournament, much less do it so that your son can get a wildcard into said event.

bagel boy, indeed. How can you lose that badly and still want to play? Crazy.

They know they aren't going to make it in tennis, they're just traveling around on their parents dime playing a game. Well, maybe a few are delusional enough to think they might make it one day.
