Seems you haven't watched Connors a lot: in the later part of his career he was going to the net A LOT and was doing something very clever that Roddick hasn't got yet: great approach shots. He was a master in that, believe me. Not the Edberg/Rafter type going to the net after every single shot, because his serve was not good enough, but another kind of all-court player...
So he's the perfect guy to complete Roddick's game in his way to the net.
