I heard Monfils will also play Buenos Aires and Quito, while Cilic will play in Buenos Aires. It got to be a good paycheck for Cilic to trade european indoor season for the golden swing on clay.
Very interesting for Cilic , a renowned hard hitter on fast courts, going to South America and changing his schedule.
Maybe he has plans on making it past QF's on the clay Masters and at RG?
Good coup for Rio, a very relevant clay 500 now, unlike Hamburg this year.
the Golden swing is dead. They try to attract players with money. This year they went with kei and he lost the final in BA and didn't win a single match in RIO doesn't make any sense for a player like cilic or monfils to play there except they were offered money and accepted it.
Cilic probably wants to improve his claycourt game. He did well this season, choked against ARV and Isner and lost vs Zverev in Masters and reached QF at RG.
Cilic did pretty well on clay this season so this isn't that surprising. He was in a huge slump up until clay season so perhaps he thinks starting earlier on clay will help him next year.
Monfils will need the points so this is a good chance for him to get some.
