Did Fed win Wimbledon for Ivanisevic in 2001?

Sampras was on the decline but he clearly raised his level during the match.
If he got through Federer, he would have faced Henman in the QF and Ivanisevic in the semis.

I don't doubt for a second he would've beaten Henman and set up a SF clash with Goran.

Considering Ivanisevic's mental fragility and Sampras owning him at Wimbledon , I can't see him overcoming Sampras.

Discuss.

Quite possibly yes, Goran was very fortunate that year for sure.

I like to think about similar what ifs in Grand Slams. One of my favourites is US Open 2003. If Nieminen had won that 5th set tiebreaker against Nalbandian in R2, I'm pretty sure Federer would've won the title (thereby stopping Roddick win any Grand Slam).

Federer would have won that slam had he not faced Nalbandian, however that doesn't mean Roddick would never win a slam title.

Evans had MPs against Rednoserinka at USO last year. If he took them, probably Djoker would have won a slam in zombie mode.

Sampras would have won the title and he probably would have 8-9 Wimbledons and 15-16 Grand Slams.

Don't think he would have beaten Del Potro in the SF. Could have been Del Potro's second USO title considering he had just roasted Djokovic in Olympics (who was playing far better then).

Yeah, very likely.

It's not Ivanisevic couldn't beat Sampras though, he did a few times, including Wimbledon 1992 SF. But yeah, Sampras vs. Goran on grass, you would always expect Sampras to win in a tough match.

Yes Fed like the good samaritan that he is did the whole field a big favour. Ivanisevic was the beneficiary.

Fed wouldn't have surpassed Pete in Wimbledon if he hadn't won the match. They would both have ended their careers with 8 Wimbledon.

Would be interesting to see what would have happened had Sampras not withdrawn from Wimbledon in 2003.

From 2001 to 2003, Fed had become dormant.
USO 2001, AO 2002, Wimbledon 2002 would have been winnable slams for him. To a lesser extent USO 2002 and AO 2003.

I think he have similar smaller racquet issue like 2013 ..which hamper him throughout 2002 , but he have no chance in 2001 USO , he was destroyed by Agassi that day ..

But loss against Haas in 2002 after MP and in USO to Mirnyi is really disturbing considering what he achieve after that ...

Don't be harsh...he is always unlucky with FO ....
Always get early round ties against descent to GOAT candidate clay-courter who is returning from injury ..which is unforgivable to any dip

Actually I think he is very unlucky in every french related title , MC , Paris duo (with 1 title each) and especially Montreal too..

Well, he wasn't so good on clay yet and he used to struggle against natural claycourters. In 2003 and 2004 Ferrero and Coria would be favorites. In 2002 maybe yes, he could have won since Costa wasn't as great and Ferrero was a ghost in the final. I think in 2004 he still would have lost to Kuerten.
