WWW Laver Cup Day 1: Zverev vs. Shapovalov

Other Day 1 matches:

Cilic-Tiafoe, interesting
Thiem-Isner, meh
Zverev-Shapovalov, MATCH OF DAY
Nadal/Berdych vs. Sock/Kyrgios, could be interesting

Not surprised Federer is not playing 3 days in a row, understandable. Also not surprised Rafa only doubles on Day 1. Berdych is in home town of Prague so of course will play doubles with Rafa

Re: WWW Laver Cup Day 1: Zverev vs. Shapovalov

Being indoors I'm expecting Zverev to win. His serve and ground game should be devastating. Honestly, I haven't seen any indoors activity by Shapo, but I'm confident he'll be up to the task.

Voting Alex in three, but after the recent Coric loss it's a 3 followed by a question mark.

Probably the tennis competition I'm least interested in since forever, even czech national competition in December gets me more than this.

I actually think Zverev will win, but giving my support to Shapovalov!

Why is Laver Cup "Europe vs the world"?

I thought Laver was Australian.

Even more so as Europe is dominating the men's tennis. What other countries outside Europe have good tennis infrastructure?
US, Canada, Australia. Maybe South Africa? (Anderson)
Hardly any in Asia Africa. Latin America used to have some great clay courters. Why isn't DelPo playing?

So it's basically three countries against everyone else.
Only that 17/18 year old kid is a hope, now that Botnic is out. Kyrgios and Querrey are other exciting players with a chance to win some matches.

Connors --> Borg --> McEnroe --> Lendl -> Sampras -> Federer --> Djokovic --> ?

or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable, It's not really tennis."

Interesting, I thought Roger said he looked forward to playing dbls with Tomas in the night session on day 1. Was there a switch with Rafa?

Getting a huge amount of money for doing basically nothing, to me that sound like they're both winning big time. Otherwise, who cares for results in an exhibition?

I have no qualms with both guys winning big time, it's good to have youngsters in the game who can compete with the old guard on level terms when it comes to affording a support structure. It will only help them going forward.

As for the match it will hopefully be competitive. Zverev will probably win, but I will be rooting for Shapi.

Not sure what's the big deal about ATP points. Unless you are fighting for the No. 1 or are hell-bend on reaching a certain seeding bracket because not good enough to beat top players, who cares?

I heard him say he thought the pairing with Berdych would work great, in his opinion, not that he actually wanted to play with him. In any case, nobody can blame him for not playing three days in a row. Especially since he might end up playing twice on Sunday (well, a a time and a half).

I suspect Zverev will prove to be a bad matchup for Shapovalov.

For now. Because of his superior consistency. Hopefully it will be a L. Hewitt- R. Federer situation later on.
