Metz R1: Yannick Maden def Kicker 6-4 3-6 6-3

1st ATP main draw win for Yannick! It's amazing to see his progress over the past 2 years. Doesn't seem so long ago that I was talking with him about college tennis on a bus trip to an ACC away match with the Clemson team.

Well, he couldn't have asked for an easier opponent when it's played on indoors hard..

To be fair, I can't imagine Maden beating anyone else in this draw. He is not a bad player, but I don't see much potential there either. Kicker indoors is a dream of a draw.

Well Istomin isn't exactly 100% fit right now and he got a lucky win over Gasquet. Maybe another chance for Maden. Also, there were a lot of winnable first round draws for him here, would have been fave over Millot, Giannessi, Mathieu, Almagro I guess.

Fair enough. Although I think 3 of those would have been 50-50; only against Giannessi would I favor Maden.

I still don't think he has any business going deep in an ATP event. Do you think he has the potential to develop his game and become a Top 100 player?

I want to bet with you! He would have been a big underdog against Mathieu and Almagro for sure, and Millot would probably have been about 1.5 against him. I think Gianessi would have maybe been 50/50.

Maden is a 27 y/o Futures/Challenger player that has never won a MD match until now.

Possible, would have been a bet for me then. At least the Millot matchup looked easy for him twice on ATP level so far.

I don't expect it at all.

That's not really the point. Winning at the ATP level is an accomplishment in itself. Yannick has already done better than I ever expected he would on the ATP to be honest. He was always a solid college player but was never elite in college (never ranked higher than #20 in the college rankings). Sometimes it's nice to celebrate the "smaller" accomplishments.

Of course, I am very happy to see journeymen winning matches at the ATP level. But I was genuinely curious whether people believe he has potential, because I haven't seen any.

I don't think he has enough power in his game to get into the top 100. Of course that's why I thought he wouldn't do as well as he has already. He's extremely smart on court and uses some great angles, good return of serve. But he does get a bit tight in close moments (based on his college play). I'm pulling for him for sure, would be cool to say I once personally knew a top 100 ATP pro.

what's cool to see is how he is doing better than several guys that bested him in college. Guys like Jarmere Jenkins, Jaime Pulgar-Garcia, Jose Hernandez-Fernandez, Henrique Cunha, Nathan Pasha all got the better of Yannick in college matches and yet yannick has zoomed past them.
