How good is Zverev?

Most pundits and many tennis fans predict Zverev will be a future world no.1 but how good is he in reality?. I actually agree that he will become world no.1 in a few years when he improves a little and the big 4 hang up their racquets but I dont think he is any better a player than Tomas Berdych for example. If Berdych was to only arrive on the scene now as a 20 year old instead of 12 years I think he would be hailed as a future world no.1 in the way Zverev is.

I am very pessimistic about the future of tennis, not since djokovic has a young player made me say 'he's gonna be great'. My point is that this future major winner and world no.1 (Zverev) would have been pummelled into submission like Berdych (and a lot of other very good players) was by the big 4 if he was part of that era and is probably no better than Tsonga or Berdych.

Re: How good is Zverev?

He's really good and could very well be a #1. That's in fact, better than really good.

Still, he doesn't seem a prodigy like Nadal or Djokovic though.

We're waiting for those prodigies since Djokovic. Gasquet, Del Potro, Cilic, Kei, Dimitrov, Thiem and all the rest falling short. Most recent would be Coric and Zverev I guess, even though Zverev had huge results considering all the other guys mentioned here, so he's still in the race.

Seems like Shapovalov is the current prodigy and he'll have a year or two to live up to the hype.

Next year might bump FAA into a prodigy candidate aswell.

It's all PR... Someone started talking about Coric and now you guys believe he's so wonderful kid, his highest ranking - 84, Dzumhur highest ranking - 87. The same actually. Difference? Coric made it via wildcards - to Basel for example, Dzumhur had to reach it by hard work, on qualies, challengers.

Re: How good is Zverev?

But in terms of attributes what does he do better than Berdych a few years back? He may be up for the fight but so was Berdych until he repeatedly got crushed in GS QF's by Nadal/Fed/Djok/Murray.

Re: How good is Zverev?

He can fall back to grinding, unlike Berdych, but the Czech has better volleys, so yeah it's about the same really, it's a rather good question, only time will tell.

Have watched (and enjoyed) the most: Safin, Agassi
Like to watch since: Federer, Gasquet, Youzhny and few others.

Way better movement and way better in the rallies.

Re: How good is Zverev?

He's much better than Tsonga. Also better than Berdych. The latter has much better volleys so far and a better FH but Zverev is a vastly superior mover, has a better serve, better BH and is also infinitely stronger mentally.

Re: How good is Zverev?

Well, he's been the most impressive 20 year old since Nadal or Djok, but look at how not impressive he is by comparison (to at least nadal, not sure what Djok was doing at that age.)
He compares extremely well against any member of the so called Gen useless (I don't really like that moniker) when any of them were his age --i.e. Raonic, Dimi, Nish--and already has 2 Masters, Dimi only has one, anyway ... more impressive it would seem already than any of them, despite being about six years younger.

So that makes him the most impressive young tennis player to emerge in ages. But he's not future Rafa, Fed Djok. UNless he has no competition, then he might look like one. LOL

I think ultimately Shap might be better than him, or at least as good.

AZ's performance is very up and down, but consistently underperforms in slams. That will have to change for him to be considered a champion.

I doubt he'd have won a slam if he was born the same year as Berdych personally. Berdych was a loser because he alwyas came up against at least 1 of the 3 greatest players ever in a slam (not a loser in my opinion).

OP might want to indicate in the title *which* Zverev, even if it seems a bit obvious

Re: How good is Zverev?

I seriously don't get all the Berdych comparisons that I've seen since he won Rome. Their gamestyles are very different, Zverev is more of a baseline counterpuncher while Berdych is an aggressive baseliner, Zverev has his BH as a strong wing while Berdych has his powerful FH. If you compare them just because they both won MS tournaments at 20, then you should probably wait a few years and see how good Zverev eventually gets.

Current Zverev is of course not better than peak Berdych, who was indeed unlucky to end up in the big 4 dominance. But Berdych's problem was that he never really stepped up a level after 2005, while Zverev's more controlled style may have a better development, so for example his level in a few years if he makes #1 could be better than what we've ever seen by Berdych.

The fact remains that Zverev, Shapovalov and FAA are in good progression result-wise compared to any of the greats in history at their age, so one can assume that they will have chances to raise the bar in the future. If they don't follow the historical upward trajectory, then they will indeed be no better than Berdych.
paca, JosGros and guitarra like this.

Enjoy every moment of tennis. Enjoy the rise of the young, the brilliance of the peak, and the passion of the old. Enjoy dominance, enjoy diversity.

Fight. Drama. Shots. Epic matches, fun stats, tennis!
