Will Federer play on clay in 2018?

I think there's a good chance he will play on clay in 2018, at least some of the events among: Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, and the FO...

Yes. I think he will play all of the 4 slams at least next year as sort of a farewell tour

I hope so, at the very least Rome+Roland Garros!

Rafa - VEB - Fed - Sascha - Wawrinka - Del Potro - Kyrgios - Tsonga.

Depends. Hopefully if he does, he's prepared for it. Can't play tournaments just like that. Canada mistake can't be repeated

I can see him skipping Miami and testing his level/body at a clay event or two before deciding on whether to commit to RG. That's what I would do anyhow.

Then again, if he truly hates playing on the stuff these days maybe anything beyond 'testing the waters' practice sessions is too much to expect. He's at the point in his career where he gets to play purely for pleasure.

Gotta think that would make it very tempting for him.

I don't think he'd ever skip a tournament where he's the defending champion. He'd probably think he could win it again.

If it's his last year on the tour he'll definitely play it, but I don't think it will be. Other than that I believe he truly is too afraid to get injured on clay these days. Combine this with the fact that grass season starts after it, and the chances next year will once again not be too big.

Agreed but the IW-Miami stretch is one helluva grind if you go deep at both and neither are that important in the grand scheme of things. Trading Miami for one or maybe two RG warmups would probably be a net gain for Federer as far as maintaining health goes and he no longer needs to be hyper-focused on WB to the exclusion of any play on clay.

I'd think the way this year's #1 chase is going plus his physical issues post-WB would make him rethink taking such a long break and skipping the 3-4k potential points at warmup clay Masters and then RG. He's surely going to do something different with his scheduling next year. Rotterdam's another tourney that could help soften the blow of skipping Miami if passing up HC points is anathema to him.

If Nadal is playing well he will pussy out again. If Nadal is not looking strong then he will try to vulture another French open like the ultimate slam vulture in history - the French open 09

He will if he thinks there's a chance he'll get to number 1 during the clay court season. He won't defend any points so I am sure he'll consider the idea provided there is a realtistic chance.

Re: Will Federer play on clay in 2018?

He may play an event like monte carlo since he will skip miami.

I think after he skipped clay this season and won halle and wimbledon the latter which he was ill and played B+ tennis not losing a set i mean why would you risk not doing that again but i bet this time he will not be ill during the tournament.

He may play a little clay if he can get num 1 but i doubt he plays rome/french open as he will save evertyhing for wimbledon.
