Re: US Open R2: [3] Federer def. Youzhny 6-1 6-7(3) 4-6 6-4 6-2

An awful, heartbreaking result for Youzhny. A psychological barriere is a psychological barriere, but having a day of rest is important for a 35yo player. It's also a real shame that he can play equal matches with Raonic at Wimbledon and Federer at USO (even when those are not having good days, yes) but can't beat random top-100 players at lower level tournaments anymore.

This was an ugly match. Glad Fed got through it. Hopefully the next one will be better.

Re: U.S. Open 17 Rd 2: (3) Federer defeats Youzhny 6-1 6-7(3) 4-6 6-4 6-2

Federer not content with the 3 five setters he played in Australia, this time he wants to play 7!

Seriously though, has anyone ever won a slam after going the distance in their opening two rounds? Insane scenes.

Federer at 20% into the third round. He looked a bit uninspired. Very casual. But it was enough to get the job done. From start to finish, this match was on his racket as always.

He probably wanted to entertain the crowd and still hit 63 winners and 68 UEs. That's not even that bad considering his intensity. Youzhny hit 27 winners/55 UEs.

Amazing trolling from Federer lol.

Horrific stuff tbh but it's admirable the fight. youzhny played well, at least for quite some time now but struggled in the last set quite a bit physically.

I'm just glad Federer is through, he's improving his 5 set record, 5-0 in 2017

No one watches the Federer service motion again (the easiest way to see if he has back issues)? Looked nothing like his normal motion again.

Hence, ....? (you can do it MTF)

I think less of you as a person if you are a fan of Rafael Nadal.

Gaudio at RG 04, played 5 sets in R1 against Canas and R2 against Novak.

WTF?

What the hell is going on.. 3h+ match in R2 after a 5 setter in R1 also.

With already a bad back, Fed really will need a miracle..

Re: U.S. Open R2: (3) Federer defeats Youzhny 6-1 6-7(3) 4-6 6-4 6-2

Very weird and scrappy match. Federer wasn't threatened at all in the first, he was even in exho mode. As a matter of fact this looked like a comfortable straight setter until Fed served for the second set and just lost concentration. Youzhny broke back, and then actually played an impressive tiebreak to take the set.

I don't agree with those who say the Colonel played "below average". Yes he had many UEs but he was taking many chances and for a while from the end of the second set to the middle of the fourth, he could hardly miss. Was hitting huge from the baseline. Then eventually he ran out of steam, and cramped up in the fifth.

Federer? Well I don't know what to say. He seems a bit stiff. It's not as bad as in the Montreal final but his movement is a little slow. Played some nice shots here and there but never really found his trademark relaxed rhythm, not even in the first set which he won easily. I sort of hope it's his back that's the problem, because if it is, then there's a chance he'll improve as the tournament goes on.
If the problem isn't his back but a dip in form, then he probably won't even reach the semi.

A win is a win, I guess. It wasn't pretty by any means.

Fortunately things can turn around quickly. No guarantee they will, of course, but one can always hope.
