Re: US Open R2: Federer def. Youzhny 6-1 6-7(3) 4-6 6-4 6-2
An awful, heartbreaking result for Youzhny. A psychological barriere is a psychological barriere, but having a day of rest is important for a 35yo player. It's also a real shame that he can play equal matches with Raonic at Wimbledon and Federer at USO (even when those are not having good days, yes) but can't beat random top-100 players at lower level tournaments anymore.
Re: U.S. Open R2: (3) Federer defeats Youzhny 6-1 6-7(3) 4-6 6-4 6-2
Very weird and scrappy match. Federer wasn't threatened at all in the first, he was even in exho mode. As a matter of fact this looked like a comfortable straight setter until Fed served for the second set and just lost concentration. Youzhny broke back, and then actually played an impressive tiebreak to take the set.
I don't agree with those who say the Colonel played "below average". Yes he had many UEs but he was taking many chances and for a while from the end of the second set to the middle of the fourth, he could hardly miss. Was hitting huge from the baseline. Then eventually he ran out of steam, and cramped up in the fifth.
Federer? Well I don't know what to say. He seems a bit stiff. It's not as bad as in the Montreal final but his movement is a little slow. Played some nice shots here and there but never really found his trademark relaxed rhythm, not even in the first set which he won easily. I sort of hope it's his back that's the problem, because if it is, then there's a chance he'll improve as the tournament goes on.
If the problem isn't his back but a dip in form, then he probably won't even reach the semi.
We should be appreciative of Federer though, because we will never see anything like him again. The fact he can still compete for slams ever after the erosion of his physical skills is really a greater testament to the natural talent he has than the period of time when he was dominating the tour.
