Novak Djokovic - How to fix him in 2018?

Personally I want to see 4 things(all geared towards shorter points and matches):

1. Improved 1st serve with emphasis on placement in all 4 corners, like Federer. More aces and more cheap points.

2. Less double faults, improve the kicker.

3. Serve & volley.

4. Chip & charge.

5. Transition game. He needs to recognize better that he's hit a good baseline shot and get to net.

6. Improved overhead.

Even if he manages to go from slugging it out 100% like pre-2018 to incorporating these tactics 20% of the time that will go a long way to preserving his health and allowing him to get back to the top of the game.

If he insists on slugging it out exclusively with the likes of Alex Zverev or Denis Shapovalov, he'll be in a for a bad shock and at best get to the outskirts of the top 10.

Those who can adapt will survive.

Those who can't perish.

Which one will it be, Nole?

Add. I don't think Agassi is the right coach for this 'new' approach. Agassi is backward-looking to try and re-establish Nole's old game which I do not believe will work in 2018-2022.

Re: Novak Djokovic - How to fix him in 2018?

Um, Nole won 4 slams in a row as recently as 1 year ago. His lack of results after FO were not because of decline but injury and a loss of motivation (and he got the motivation back). When Nole is healthy he will dominate and return to #1. He doesn't need to change anything at all.

The game is evolving all the time my friend. If you think all Nole needs is to healthy and he will automatically dominate again, you're in for a rude awakening. I predict #5 to #10 ranking at best if he sticks to his old style.

Yup...it evolved by allowing Federer to vulture in Nole's absence. But next year it'll evolve again with Nole's return and Nole will dominate and be #1 again.

He should be more aggressive, so that he can't be hit off the court. Also if he stopped trying to get everyone to love him that would be great. He should get back to number 1 in the next couple of years if he is fit

Stupid uninformed thread. Likely created to undermine and disrespect Novak.

None of these are Novak's problem. When on, his game is still by far superior and unbeatable. i.e. the match is always on his racquet and no player in the world can beat him.

His problem is mental and lack of dedication and focus. That is all that need to be addressed.

Re: Novak Djokovic - How to fix him in 2018?

well, that's wishful thinking, easier said than done

out of the things listed the only somehow realistic is his serve improvement but that is also due to the fact that it got so much worse in 2016

other things - highly improbable/ unrealistic at this stage if his career, he's not Pete Sampras or Roger Federer to start serve&volley or chip&charge at 30

His problem is age and lack of time machine, if only he could travel back in time and be 25 again.... but wait Agassi claims he actually is 25

Re: Novak Djokovic - How to fix him in 2018?

Well he can take a bit of what Wawrinka, Nadal and Federer have been taking in recent years. I mean they all seem to magically found an extra level when they should be slowing down. Perhaps if Novak speak to one of their nutritionist he might get some input of value.

For the cynics like me, I think he's well aware already.

If Novak is clean, there's not much he can do, age catches up with everyone eventually, everyone except for Federer and to a lesser extent Nadal.

Sure he could improve his serve stats and sure he can add some weight to his groundstrokes by changing racquet. But how in the blue quack is anyone supposed to increase the ground speed and flexibility when they're the wrong side of 30.

Re: Novak Djokovic - How to fix him in 2018?

If i were a Nolefan i would sign the papers right now to finish with 3 more slams at 15 and surpass Sampras.
On clay he need to put more spin on the ball. Look at Thiem and Nadal, clay is a spingame right now, so maybe changing his racket or the strings on it.
He needs like Nadal and Fed to shorten the points and to take the ball even earlier than before.

The problem for Novak now is that there is a group of young people rising. His enemy is time.

He should focus on what he does best, ie. pushing and grinding, and all problems will take care of themselves.

Yeah, to hire someone that hates tennis as your coach can't be productive. Half of Nole's success comes from internal motivation and hunger anyway.

When I'm at that topic, do you guys think some players really love tennis? We know now Agassi and Tomic hate the game, but who are the guys that explicitly said they really passionately love tennis?
I adore the game, both playing even if it's amateur play and watching.
