Is Nadal's RG 13 fifth set the greatest defense in the history of tennis?

Is Nadal's 5th set RG 13 SF the greatest defensive display you have ever seen? Has there ever been a more impenetrable defense than that? I was curious so thought Ill open this thread even if it's about Nadal since all players are equal in my eyes.

Anyway, it looked like no matter what DJ did, Nadal had an answer esp after Nadal got back on track after the first few games of the fifth set.
CommissarSJ and Han Solo like this.

Weak era -

You misspelled "offense", 20+ winners from Nadal in that set.

His defensive peak was much earlier in his career.

I think in his early years, his defense was more impenetrable on clay, he seemed capable of retrieving balls from the stands and his passing shots were from another planet.

Exactly, if anything he displayed a really offensive shotmaking in that fifth set hitting 20+ winners only in this set alone. If anything I would rather tend to name it great offensive tennis quite untypical for Rafa in general.

Net touch, to my mind had nothing to do with the final outcome. Djokovic was just blown away in this set and would lose it anyway.

Federer - Thiem - Wawrinka - Del Potro - Dimitrov - Shapovalov

I think, 2008 French Open final where he made Federer look like an amateur.

RAFA hit 22 winners in the 5th set, so no. RAFA, at his best, is the best defender the game has ever seen. I suggest you watch RG '08

at the bolded part.

Like others have already pointed out, his offense won him that set, especially the FHDTL. I think you need to watch older matches to see his peak defence.

It was one of the best fifth sets I've ever seen in a tennis match. Quality was insanely high and Nadal really took it. Breathtaking stuff. I think at that point a lot of people thought that he was going to surpass Federer. I know I did.

I think Babydal (2005) had the best defence, he was clearly quicker than in 2013.

First point here

And these are just off the top of my head.

Defense? Hardly.

Offense.

I have it as the greatest individual set in tennis history.

OP you cannot yet properly assess matches, it seems. His defense was stellar, but he did not have the vertical speed of '05-'08.

Re: Is Nadal's RG 13 fifth set the greatest defense in the history of tennis?

No, look for Nadal's clay matches against Federer in 2005 and 2006 to see really unbelieavable defense. Also that F against Coria in 2005 (Rome I believe).

Djokovic was tired in that 5th set and Nadal was dominating most of the play. Somehow, Nole sneak up a break early, but couldn't sustain, mainly due to that stupid net touch.

a.k.a.
Doktor Carpet -- The Fogmeister -- Ragnar Lothbrok -- Sicario

Do you wonder what I've been doing the last 3 months?

Without the net touch Djokovic would have served for the match, so he likely would have won, giving that Nadal could finally break him many games after that, even hitting that many winners.

On the topic of GOAT set, is there any other set of a player hitting IIRC NINETEEN BASELINE TO BASELINE Winners (and 22 winners overall)?

Nevermind, he did this on CLAY, against DJOKOVIC.

Has to be the GOAT set.
