Attila Balasz (#167) prefers Hungary ITF Futures over US Open qualies and Manerbio CH

He plays a 15k ITF Futures tournament instead of US Open qualies or Manerbio CH. He is my hero.

He is the highest ranked player this week to play in a Futures (and I think the only one from the Top 200). Seeing it's Hungary, maybe it is to promote for his country? Maybe he isn't confident to go deep in those other tournaments? The first guess is my most logical reason IMO (including off-court endorsements probably).

I think he is slightly injured and decided to go there instead.

same for Pironkova, excuse my off topic (but if fixing and doping are allowed to be discussed over and over again, maybe mentioning a woman shouldn't be so terrible...).

She has a little injury concern and decided not to participate at the USO qualies. She's not playing smaller tourneys, but she's totally fit to play, just refuses.

That's coz at some point you weigh your chances and just stop investing in your career, and leave that to the 18-22yo players.

3 grueling matches, half the World traveling and much expenses with 0 guarantee and most of the time you'd lose money over it...i kinda understand.

If a run here I think just gives 18 points I think, wonder why he skipped when he can grab at least 35 if he could qualify (and play of course) -- that's almost double of what he could earn here with 2 less matches.

Hes absolute trash on hardcourt, decent player on clay but I think he gave himself like zero chance to qualify. Check his matches history, he only plays on clay.

Don't forget that to play US Open qualifiers he would need to travel across the ocean which costs a LOT for a lower ranked player and what if he loses in the first round? He's playing it safe, not very surprising and a really reasonable choice.

Federer - Thiem - Wawrinka - Dimitrov - Shapovalov

Good point, but why this Futures tournament and not Manerbi Challenger? I still think he is a bit injured and wanted easy opponents to get his rhythm.

I was thinking of this and also recent post on how much does a player need to earn in order to live nicely when I watched Chiudinelli win his match at USO last night. Here is a player that turns 36 in 2 weeks, had some success on tour but for all the time on tour his earnings are sub 2 million dollars. How much money is taxed? How much money are his travel expenses? Coaching? Marco was successful last year and even won a match in main draw, still odds of him qualifying not great, yet he's here? He be an interesting player to get ask these questions cause other players his age or older that are still active made far more money than him.

Today he lost in catastrofic fashion against a mug. It was a surpirse for me after his great Davis cup performance against RUssia
