Thiem would have beaten Ferrer had he played with a Prince racquet also.

Nice to see a better player exposing a mindless ballbasher. Ferrer is back to using his old racquet thankfully. He actually has a very good chance of winning this tournament. I hope he goes all the way.

no he didnt. He played a fine match, with most UE's coming after already long rallies.

Ferrer played one of the better matches of his career.

Ferrer wasted last 1.5 years of his career by using that crappy racquet. Thankfully he has switched back to his older racquet. He was insanely good today.

What do those stats even mean?

Pretty sure there were way more points than 7 with 5 or more shots.

Vintage Ferrer today, he's showing how he was so consistent in 2012-13. Thiem wasn't as bad as last week, but still much to improve. Highlight of the match was the first game of the second set, amazing game full of winners by both. Decent match actually, Ferrer hit with such depth that forced a lot of Thiem's "unforced" errors.

Epic stuff from Ferrer, it's like he's back to prime for a while. Thiemug was absolutely clueless in rallies the entire match. In fact, the lone break he got was when he switched to net rushing, but abandoned that immediately afterwards and went back to getting owned in rallies. "No plan B" strikes again, very plainly. Thiem will sadly remain a claycourt specialist as long as he doesn't fix that and work on making his game multifaceted.

Congrats to David, what a legend. He looked so energized and passionate, and played with so much accuracy and gusto.

Thiem looked uninspired and just mentally/physically drained, and therefore always a step behind. His serve was better than usual, at least. Pretty disappointing, but I expect him to be more himself again at Flushing Meadows.

Disgusting result.

Pointless discussion going on here. It's def. questionable whether Thiem can beat this version of Ferrer on HC or not. But after a performance like this (and his other matches lately), he should rather be focused on his own level because there is nothing that suggests that he is playing at a top 30 level on HC himself which will lose him matches against a lot of players, not only this "unplayable" Ferrer.

Ferrer played well, but it's not like he was on fire like some are saying. He played like a top 20 player, a place he is likely to be back soon with a few more good tournaments.

Thiem was absolutely dreadful, barely top 50 level. He won 2 points out of 22 returning Ferrer's bombs in 1st set. As usual, lack of plan B when things aren't working.

Ugh, he was on fire. What possible motive could you possibly have to downplay Ferrer here?

It couldn't possibly be so far-fetched to premeditatedly downplay Rafa's possible next round, right?

He could do it in theory (he downed Nadal twice in 2007 on quite quick HC) with his controlled aggression + grinding, but I reckon he'd choke KNOWING Nadal's the only obstacle to a 2nd Masters title (Isner's a dream match-up and Dimitrov's just gutless)

I didn't know about the racket change either. Ferrer's results obviously indicated a decline, and all the pundits were writing him off, yet I never really noticed much of a physical change. David looked like he was in great shape and and he seemed to be pretty much as quick and agile as ever. But you took one look at his lousy results and couldn't help but assume the end was near. I'm so happy for him that he's re-discovered his old mojo. Ferrer works so hard off court and fights so hard on court that he deserves this resurgence.
