Cincy R3: Nadal def. Ramos 7-6(1) 6-2

Played pretty well from 1-2 0-40 down in the second set. Didn't see the rest of the match. Would appreciate those who watched to explain how set 1 was that close.

Re: Cincy R3: Nadal def. Ramos 7-6(1) 6-2

Whats more bizarre is that Rafa didn't get a BP all 1st set. I only watched a few games but he was making a lot of shanks.

Nadal - Fognini - Goffin - Shapovalov - Dolgopolov - Haas - Coppejans

Have nice life after tennis Malisse, you were a legend!

Roger Federer was highly embarrassed at Roland Garros on Sunday afternoon. And he's only himself to blame for letting his tubby fiancee Mirka sit in the stands.
Poor old Fed - he offered as much resistance to Rafael Nadal during the French Open as Mirka does when the dessert trolley appears. - The Mirror

Re: Cincy R3: Nadal def. Ramos 7-6(1) 6-2

I only saw part of the tiebreak (at work), where ARV looked weak. Nadal must have been sleepwalking to let it come to a tiebreak at all.

Nadal is fortunate that he had a quick and apparently easy R3 match while his next opponent Kyrgios was 2 points away from losing. The weather is turning into an advantage for him. This is a golden opportunity for an easy 1000 points and a big step towards securing YE #1.

I support Federer, Murray, Karlovic, Shapovalov, Goffin, Dimitrov, Djokovic, Gulbis, Haase, and others on occasion.
A weak era is an era that becomes stronger when you remove the strongest players.

Yeah, but Gyros's match couldn't have been tiring, probably 80% points were max 2 shots long. He only played roughly 20 mins more than Rafa. Mental fatigue would be more likely.

I watched the whole 1st set. Ramos-Vinolas was very solid on serve. Nadal had no chance. The match was quite even until RV started to crumble when he double-faulted on the tiebreak.

Vinolas peaked in the first set, Rafa didnt play bad. He was good, not second set good but good. Vinolas hit nice winners, great retrieving passing shots, etc.

Nice bendover from Vamos-Gruntnolas in the second set. Nadal solid but nothing special whatsoever.

Could be a good one against Kyrgios, who however has been looking lethargic all week, so I'm trying not to expect too much resistance there either.

Not a high quality one due to windy conditions.

Re: Cincy R3: Nadal def. Ramos 7-6(1) 6-2

Clutchier player won.
ARV wasn't giving anything away the entire first set. TB was a bit of a flop, but the game remained even until that heroic hold by Nadal. Rafa, OTOH, didn't look particularly sharp, a heavier hitter would've blown him off the court. Lots of atypical UE's. He almost broke himself in the second set, but then woke up and won 5 straight points from 0-40 including double ace. ARV couldn't recover from that and Nadal never looked back.

Well, that doesn't bode well for the next match.

He had one bp which was also a set point.

Overall Ramos is a good opponent to feel out the court and find the range from the baseline.

This plus the windy conditions in Cincy. I think Ramos had a thought he might could defeat Rafa, but that started to go downhill with the good TB Rafa played. And in the 2nd set Rafa did lift his play.
