Santo Domingo R2: #518 Christian Rodriguez def Almagro 6-2 6-2

the 27 year old outside of the top500 easily puts away Nico Almagro. Should Almagro call it a career?

Is he fully healthy? Scoreline would suggest not

Almagro was playing at about 20%, not sure if because of injury, already got his appearance fee or just didn't care. Was serving 2nd serves on 1st and just generally not into it at all.

Do Challengers give out appearance fees? If so, wow, that's news to me. There's so little money in the Challengers that it's surprising that they have the budget for appearance fees.

Why even bother to play it then? He is Almugro indeed.

Federer - Thiem - Wawrinka - Del Potro - Dimitrov - Shapovalov

Yes, even Challengers give appearance fees to players to try and drive business. Especially Challengers in areas where they are the only tennis tourney for the year and may be close to resorts. Can't say if Santo Domingo does or not.

But famously, Verdasco received an appearance fee to show up to Projestrov Challenger & promptly tanked to 1000+ ranked Marek Semjan in 2012 because he didn't want to stay there for more than a day.

More mentally stable player won.

And no, Almagro didn't fly to the Dominican Republic for an appearance fee at a Challenger . First tournament back from injury after retiring in R2 of Roland Garros.

Regardless if this was a tank, Mugro should just retire.

Re: Santo Domingo R2: #518 Christian Rodriguez def Almagro 6-2 6-2

he's not passing up the 50 k for first rd losers in the open. hopefully he plays 2 sets before he pulls the ripcord

it's a problem with the system that encourages hurt players to do this. the top 20 can afford to skip when hurt. most of the rest can't

hopefully he won't be on a show ct

ps i like the guy just have a problem w the system

MTF always lacking perspective

Still, will be tough for him to become a tour player again, it already was before the last injury.

I watched the first set. Almagro tanked it in the most obvious way ever
