Re: Goodbye Kafelnikov

Seems like only yesterday he was in the aussie open final against agassi.

Fair play to Henman with his rankings consistency, I didnt realise he topped the list.

Re: Goodbye Kafelnikov

*#*I don't know why but I feel a little meloncholy to hear about Kafelnekov's great run coming to an end!!!
>> He was the guy I loved to hate & maybe you grow to like your enemies somehow.
#(@_@) The Russian seemed so arrogant & aloof and always putting his foot in it but you've got to admire what he achieved over the years.
Ofcourse we expected him to retire last year but it's too his credit that without any great results he still managed to stay in the Top 50~~>> just long enough to claim the 10year anniversary benchmark.
It was great that Russia won the Davis Cup in 02 especially after Kafelnekov had worked so hard to them in the Finals in 94-95, but sad that he couldn't have the last laugh because he lost his singles & doubles match^ instead Safin carried the team in the end.
Oh well atleast YK will have plenty of $$$ to keep him happy in his retirement, plus the Aussie Open, French Open Trophies & Olympic Gold Medals to show his grandchildren.

Who can I love to hate now?!? Maybe Roddick? But Duckboy is actually good for the game isn't he?!?

I wish he at least had a farewell tour like Michael Chang, competing for the last time at his favourite tournaments.

G'bye Yevgeny and congrats on a great career

I second that...

Really sad to see a player of his stature departs quietly like that...
But that's Kafelnikov, the way he is....

Re: Goodbye Kafelnikov

Actually Kafelnikov has surprised me; obviously he's more modest than I gave him credit for~ if he'd done the farewell tour like Chang(actually Michael's farewell tour was nearly 4-years 2000-03) then Yevgeny would be using up spots that perhaps younger more motivated rivals deserved...!
* I respect the way YK has decided to depart but I do hope they give him a special presentation at RG & the Moscow tournament-->> atleast I'd like to hear him do a speech again.

Re: Goodbye Kafelnikov

That Chang farewell tour was really sad. He should retire before. I hopeYegeny doesn't do that

I think this was only consecutive weeks, not total weeks.

I think we're talking about consecutive weeks. Andre fell to No. 141 in 1997.

It is a bit sad to see Yevgeny leaving without much fanfare after such a good career. 10 straight years in the Top 50 is impressive.

Yes, impressive. So sad to see him leave on such a quiet note. Best of luck to him in retirement.

I dont think Grosjean has been longer in top 10 than Hewitt for consecutive weeks or not.

Re: Re: Goodbye Kafelnikov

True, but it does say Top 50, not Top 10. Come on Henman, stick it out for another couple of years and you'll break the record!

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.
