How do people come up with this kind of nicknames?

I just read in another thread a new nickname Saffy - a-ka Marat Safin.

I have never heard Marat Safin to be called this way. I've heard Kafel, Federer Express, A-Rod, etc. (all are very well known).

So how do people come up with nicknames?

what other "creations" of this board have you seen that make you do this ?

I think people just give their fave players pet names and its their own creation but names like the A-Rod and fed express, kafel and guga have been around years and tennis commentators and journalists use them frequently.

How about the Americans giving the foreign players "American" names. Guillermo "Bill" Coria. Carlos "Charlie" Moya. That is just pathetic.

go and look for the nickname reference list and you'll get answers to most questions concerning nicknames.

We never use the name saffy here so this poster must be a newbie

Yeah, pretty awful.

But just imagine the "english" names translated to Spanish.

We'd have: Andrés Roddick, Marcos Philippoussis, Rainiero Schuettler, Timoteo Henman, Arnoldo Clement, Jaime Blake, etc....

Aren't all love stories destined to fail?

Um, Carlos Moya *does* get called Charlie in Spain. Or have I missed something here?

The most funny thing is how Czech people talk about women. So here we've got:

Monika Selesova, Serena Williamsova, Jennifer Capriatiova, Cara Blackova, Nicole Prattova and Dally Randriantefyova

Just look at Czech Teletext, ain't it funny?
I once heard in the Czech radio Celine Dionova and Britney Spearsova

Re: How do people come up with this kind of nicknames?

Occasionally I like to use "Scud-muffin" for philippoussis. Not that I like him much, or dislike him. I just think its a nice, cheesy embarrassing nickname to use.

One that I seriously use though, which I dont find bad, is ToJo for Thomas Johansson. (I use it here sometimes, but mostly in the group I try to maintain-see Jonas Bjorkman link in my signature )

How about Pedro Sampras? Roberto Ginepri! Miguel Youzhny... Juan Ljubicic... Felipe Kohlschreiber... or one of my faves: Esteban Koubek Xavy Malisse

Or we can go back to the "English" naming: John Charles Ferrero... Charles Moya Thomas Robredo Joseph Acasuso Phil Volandri Rick Gasquet

Absurd!!
