So you have really seen all the great players, Avocadoe. How enviable

Re: In which decade did you start watching tennis?

My family always watched Wimbledon, and my brother played, so I remember watching matches vaguely as a little girl in the late 70's, and then got into Lendl in the 80's. I remember the frustrating days when the only tennis on was at Wimbledon...............

I think for me the most talented of all times was (Marcelo) Rios. Marat Safin, 2004

Marcelo has an enormous talent. Gaudio, RG champion 2004

"Rios ... he has a beautiful game, great forehand and great touch," Federer, World number 1

Guillermo Coria: "Ríos and Vilas are my two idols"

Re: In which decade did you start watching tennis?

The 1960's.

I went to school in central London and it was normal for those interested to catch the District Line train and travel out to Southfields and walk the remaining distance to Wimbledon.

There was never any problem getting a grounds ticket.

Even during the Borg era, there ws no queuing for grounds passes. Just moderate waits for standing room on Centre Court.

All the better class of schools would send coach loads of pupils in full school uniform to watch, especially girls' schools. Think Miss Jean Brodie does Wimbledon.

In 1977 I was involved in a minor way with the L A Southwest Open and it was a quaint tournament. As was the forerunner of Indian Wells, the Pilot Pen in La Quinta. By 1989, I was flabbergasted and delighted to find the new Indian Wells tournament right on my doorstep, with a fabulous stadium court. The public coul have a gourmet buffet lunch alongside the players.
As a comparison, I don't miss the Indian Wells Tennis Garden at all.

Re: In which decade did you start watching tennis?

i started watching it way back in the 1890's. they where the days with horseless carriages n' all.
a crazy fact from the 19th century Wimbledon demands there players to wear all white uniforms that makes them look like serial murders, i 'm glad they moved on with the times....................wait a minute...!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". Never thought I'd see a reference to it on a tennis board.

Also amazing that you've been involved with tennis for so long. I am forever lamenting the fact that I missed the heyday of Borg and McEnroe.

I happened upon tennis in the days of Becker, Edberg, Andre etc... My claim to fame is having seen Pete Sampras win his first ever title at a now-defunct indoor tournament in Philadelphia. This was (I think 1988 or 1989).

Re: In which decade did you start watching tennis?

I think video does justice to Borg and McEnroe. Now Nastase had to be seen to be believed.

But if you caught Edberg, count yourself blessed.

Oh, and I saw the slightly younger Pete taken apart by Mecir 0 and 1 in 1989.
