Re: In which decade did you start watching tennis?

I was a huge fan of Becker. I remeber the first tournament I watched was 1991 Wimbledon. Becker lost to Stich in the final. I was heartbrokenAfter that I became faithful follower of mens tennis. I have always disliked WTA. Cant beleive they get paid the same!

So was I, what an upset that was...

I was pretty much the only Becker fan among the people I knew back then. He started to get a lot more credit after he stopped playing Tennis... in Austria anyways.

One thing I learned by participating in this forum: Federer is the GOAT and this is no insult

I was 10 in 1980 when I got into tennis. Wimbledon finals Borg vs McEnroe - my mother was watching and I watched it with her. Been a fan (on again and off again) ever since. I was never a 'student of the game' however.

Re: In which decade did you start watching tennis?

fed got me hooked. well i have to say before fed was around no one here broadcasted tennis. all i knew was that sampras was the best player in the world and i saw him winning in the short segments of the sport news show.

actually thats not true. i saw many matchs of hingis before but i wasn't really hooked either.

First started watching in 1992, the first televised match I remember is Edberg/Sampras final @US Open. That was when I became a Sampras fan.

Watching since 90s, grew up in Sydney = January school holidays spent lying on couch watching tennis on tv. Wasn't until 2006 that I started waking up at strange hours to follow livescores on the internet.

Re: In which decade did you start watching tennis?

I started watching in the mid 1950s, but not regularly, partly because I preferred cricket, and partly because the only tournament covered on UK TV was Wimbledon. I remember Jaroslav Drobny from 1954 and Louise Brough from 1955.

Men in long white trousers and ladies in tennis dresses.

Total dominance by Australia in the men's game, Rosewall, Hoad, Laver, Fraser, Cooper, Emerson, Stolle, Newcombe, Roche.

USA winning the majority of ladies titles, but some good performances by Britain, including an all-British final in 1961.

A different world then!
