Rusedski to play Aberdeen Cup

Sponsors rally round 2006 Aberdeen Cup

The Aberdeen Cup will be Murray's next appearance on British soil
The second annual Aberdeen Cup tennis challenge between Scotland and England gets underway in under seven weeks with Andy Murray making his first appearance back in Scotland since becoming a world top-20 ranked player.

The 2006 Aberdeen Cup takes place at the AECC Press and Journal Arena from 25-26 November and will see Murray team up with his older brother Jamie and British No.5 Elena Baltacha in a Scotland team looking to inflict a second consecutive defeat over Greg Rusedski’s England side.

Since leading Scotland to victory over the auld enemy in the inaugural Aberdeen Cup last year, Murray has become one of the tennis world’s hottest properties.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed an astonishing year on the ATP Tour, highlights of which include his first ATP title win in San Jose, a straight-sets defeat of world No.1 Roger Federer, claiming the British No.1 spot for the first time, and progressing to the second week of Wimbledon and the US Open. His performances since last year’s Aberdeen Cup saw him climb a massive 50 places up the world rankings to a career-high No.16.

Murray’s ever growing profile both on and off court has contributed significantly to the commercial value of the event and WSM, the tournament promoter, has announced three major commercial partners – including support from both the private and public sector.

Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Asset Management and FirstGroup plc – the UK’s largest surface transportation company – have each become partner sponsors of the 2006 event and will be looking to leverage upon the success of last year’s inaugural outing.

Joining Greg Rusedski in the England team will be British No.3 Katie O’Brien, who won her first $25,000 singles title in Nottingham earlier this month, and James Auckland, Britain’s No.2 ranked doubles player.

The atmosphere at last year’s Aberdeen Cup was truly amazing and I’m delighted that we’ll be returning again this year to play in front of such a fantastic crowd.

Andy Murray, British Number 1

Re: Rusedski to play Aberdeen Cup

I saw a little bit of this last year, the most interesting match was the apalling mismatch in the girls encounter.

Why anyone would pay £35 to watch Elena Baltacha is beyond me?

It is currently one set all. Murray took the first set 6-3, Rusedski the second 6-2.

They're handing each other sets...no way would Greg win a set 6/2 vs Andy...he should have lost 6/2 6/2 by now.
