Wimbledon Centre Court Re-Development

Straight after the 2006 Championships the re-development of Wimbledon's Centre Court began. The Centre Court of the future will offer a larger 15,000 capacity, more comfortable seats and a retractable roof over the court.

Wimbledon's website has detailed descriptions of all the work that has been done so far and what is intended over the coming months and years.

http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/about...gtermplan.html

They also have some excellent time-lapse videos from both inside and outside of the court right from during the last week of play in 2006 through all of the construction work being done up until September. Hopefully they will post more videos when they have them unless the work has finished until next year.

It's amazing to see the clean up process and then the entire East Stand being demolished... If you've got a spare moment check them out.

Unbelievable that in England it takes three years to built such a roof.
No surprise they can't finish the Wembley stadium.

Though funny...it is highly frustrating that we proclaim that British companies just can't compete with the prices of foriegn contractors yet how many millions have these Aussie's gone over by?

I doubt it, us Brits are a bit too snobbing and traditional to bring it in

They were apparently testing it this year, ready for use next year...

The only issue would be the large screens for the replay, but maybe they will use small ones next to the umpires chair or something. Can't imagine they will though as that wouldn't be very fan-friendly.

Its a tough balance between maintaining tradition and incorporating the new technology.

Mind you, they've just demolished the whole left side of the court so who knows!!

Putting a roof on the court and adding seats has nothing to do with the success of British tennis players, but the success of Wimbledon itself as a tournament.

Re: Wimbledon Centre Court Re-Development

Britain should develop its tennis players first.
Henman would like the roof before...

Re: Wimbledon Centre Court Re-Development

Great stuff and it should finish in time. Unlike Wembley, this isn't being handled by the government.

2007 no roof in place. The court will look a bit strange and the fans will enjoy running to get out of the rain.
