"A tough time for federer...", a quote by hrbaty!

What do you think of hrbaty's quote on davydenko?

"I don't think I ever played anybody who played better than he did today," said Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty, the Russian's opponent in the final. "If he plays as well as he did here, he's going to give Federer a tough time."

Federer should not be afraid of Davydenko. Hrbaty lost, and was looking for excuse.

Fed will smoke Nikolay in two straight sets. Something like 6-3, 6-1.

I think he's right...Federer struggles most against players who are solid from the back of the court. If Kolya is playing consistently excellent stuff, there is no reason why he can't give Federer a tough time...but beating him is a different story. Think back to the AO 2006...Fed got a little lucky there

Um, players today are only good from the back of the court and Fed doesn't seem to be struggling against any of them.

Nothing against Davydenko of course, but I don't put too much stock in this quote. Hrbaty is using himself as a reference point, which is irrelevant when discussing Davydenko's chances against Federer.

Well said. Did he take into account Davi's H2H against Fed ?

"I asked a bloke in the front row if he liked the serve-and-volley stuff," said Rafter. "He said he did but asked if he was going to get to see any rallies. 'Not today, mate,' I told him."

It sounds like a gracious comment. I am sure Federer agrees that Davydenko might give him a tough time. He has in the past.

Re: "A tough time for federer...", a quote by hrbaty!

pete bodo's appraisal of davydenko as a human litmus test is by far the most accurate of a description of davy's game i can think of. davy is solid in every respect: backhand, forehand - i'd go on but id merely be listing parts of the game. but players who can beat him are usually players that have the x factor in them, who can take their game to the next level of not just rallies but constructing points and like roddick who has a 4-0 record against davy, have a huge weapon to back up the rest of their game.

Then who are Murray and Nadal?

Those 2 are some of the best returners in the game...and are also able to control rallies.

Davydenko will have to play as well as he did in Paris and play like this constantly against Federer. IF he can I think he could make it tough for Federer, but Federer is still the favourite

PMK showed in Melb that if he plays his best tennis he can bother him. Only his brain stopped him from going two sets to one ahead.

Hrbaty defeated Federer in 2004.

yeah, I get this impression as well. That said, Davy IS on fire, so... who knows. Hope to see an interesting match!

I can think of a great many compliments to pay Nadal but he really, honestly, truly, isn't one of the best returners of the modern game. On clay, yes, but if you look at his statistics off that surface, he really is a pretty poor returner (by the very highest standards, of course.) The ATP published some statistics and he was well down. Federer and Davydenko are the best, with Federer the more impressive because he plays far fewer second division tournaments.
