With todays aray of chokes it got me to thinking, what do you think is the biggest choke of the year?

I was just thinking of a few:

Safin (Rome) & Blake (New Haven) vs. Ramirez-Hidalgo

Safin led 6-0, 4:1 with double break and lost 6-0, 6-7, 6-7.
Blake led 6-2 and 6:4 in the second set tie-break, and 5:2 in the third, wasted 5 match points and lost 6-2, 6-7, 6-7.

I know, I am just very upset about it, he was up a double break, I think whenever you give up a double break it is choking pretty bad.

Santoro led *3-0 against Benneteau too, had 4 MPs AND served for the match at 5-4.

Re: Biggest choke of the year?

How about Soderling losing a match to Andreev in Indian Wells when he had 9 match points!

If I were a tennis player, I'd rather lose 6-0, 6-0 than lose a match where I had 9 friggin match points!

Here was our MTF discussion on that Andreev-Soderling match..
Andreev def. Soderling 3:6 7:6(14) 6:4 saving 9mp's

Re: Biggest choke of the year?

For most costly choke, though not the biggest, how about Federer dumping an easy forehand into the net on match point at Rome, followed by hitting the next one long, after having led 5-2? I mean Nadal might have saved them anyway, but handing them to him was not the way to go.

Roddick against Murray in Wimbledon. He had 14 break point opportunities in the first set alone. Couldn't get a one.

wat.

Re: Biggest choke of the year?

Haas's choke at the US open, made even more painful by him cracking his racquet into his cramping quads repeatedly. I don't think I've ever actually winced while watching tennis on TV until that day.

Re: Biggest choke of the year?

That match wasn't really a choke. Davydenko's style of play is to wear his opponent down with his consistency. These are the type of opponents that Tommy regularly loses to. Haas had already played two very long matches in 3 days that ended in fith set breakers. In the third set he didn't play badly, it was 50/50 and Davydenko got the break. After that you could see Haas beginning to lose steam mentally. You could hear him say during the match 'I know this guy' meaning, he knew that Davydenko wasn't going to go away and the knowledge that it was going to be another long grind was wearing him down mentally.
