Barcelona Open to name centre court after Rafael Nadal

Quadra central do ATP 500 de Barcelona terá o nome de Nadal - ESPN.com.br

Great news and well-deserved.

Quote:
On Thursday, the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, which annually receives the ATP 500 of Barcelona, announced a major change. From now on, the central court of the tournament will be named Rafael Nadal.

Largest champion in the history of the Catalan tournament, Nadal will try to seek the tenth title on Spanish clay in 2017, between April 24 and 30. Taurus Miúra won the trophy from 2005 to 2009, from 2011 to 2013, and in 2016.

Nadal is the only player in history to win nine titles in three different tournaments. The King of Saibro is the champion of the Masters 1000 of Monte Carlo, the ATP 500 of Barcelona and Roland Garros

Re: Barcelona Open to name centre court after Rafael Nadal

So will Nadal be the first player to win a tournament with its center court already named after him?

Taurus Miúra deserves this. It's his home tournament and he won it a zillion times.

I always feel they should wait until a player's retired before doing this sort of thing. Doing it while someone's still playing carries too much risk of bias towards the recent.

It was very well expected that one of clay court tournaments will name the centre court after him. But, as rightfully pointed out, I too have preferred it after he retired. Playing on a court named after onself. Also, Nadal is a Madridista. RMA fans in ruins.

It's expected that one of the Spanish clay tournaments would do so. Comparatively with Madrid he has had more success at Barcelona so it is understandable why it was Barcelona instead of Madrid.

RG will never ever name Court Central after a non-Frenchman no matter how accomplished Rafa has been there.

Was hoping RG would rename its centre court after him. Now it'd be a little wierd for that to happen, so I'm sort of disappointed.

Poor Rafa. No pressure to win la decima on a court named after him. No pressure at all. Hopefully he pulls through. That would be epic.

I still can't get over them naming the Brisbane Centre Court after Pat Rafter when Evonne Goolagong doesn't even have one yet. A MESS.

Real Club Tennis Barcelona is his tennis club. He is much more close to Barcelona than Madrid, although he supports Real Madrid (that is a not important thing here)
