Enjoy your retirement Jiri Novak

Jiri Novak has played his last main level ATP event losing to David Ferrer in Basel.

Jiri won 7 singles titles and 18 doubles titles. He came as an alternate in the TMC in Shanghai and won a match and best Slam performance was the AO SF in 2002 losing to Thomas Johansson.

SINGLES CAREER TITLES (7):
1996--Auckland;
1998--Mexico City;
2001--Gstaad, Munich;
2003--Gstaad;
2004--Basel, Tokyo

FINALIST (6):
1996--Mexico City;
2002--Madrid TMS, Vienna
2003--Dubai, Shanghai;
2005--Delray Beach

He will play one more time in Prostejov, but the smiling and cheery Jiri will now drink beer, get fat and stay around with his family.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Jiri.

Will really be missed by me. Great guy and great player, though too often not appreciated by many fans simply because he is not as outspoken.

Re: Enjoy your retirement Jiri Novak

That's a surprise really. After all the effort he made to get back in shape after his injuries earlier in the year it seems a shame to suddenly end it while he was once again playing pretty well but then as a family man I guess it makes sense.

At least by retiring now he finishes still playing well which had he retired at the end of last year wouldn't have been the case.

Re: Enjoy your retirement Jiri Novak

Did he announce it after the match, or had it been planned for a while and I just hadn't heard it?

Nice classy guy, I can't imagine any player ever had anything negative to say about the quiet Czech

Re: Enjoy your retirement Jiri Novak

i remember sitting in Armstrong Stadium watching Novak's 5-setter against Sampras in '95 or '96, Jiri must have been 18 or 19 then...

Re: Enjoy your retirement Jiri Novak

He was certainly an underrated player and never got the credit he deserved. I remember the British media gave Henman lots of stick after the Olympics for losing to this 'nobody'.

Jiri's had a career many others can only dream of.

I am BUOH, warrior of heart and soul.
