Will Federer catch Agassi for most different "big" titles won?

By winning Madrid, Federer has now won 3 of the 4 majors and 6 of the 9 Masters Series and the Masters Cup
he has won 10 of the 14 "big" events at least once (missing Roland Garros, Paris, Rome, Monte Carlo)

Agassi won 4 of the 4 majors and 7 of the 9 Masters Series/Super 9 and the Masters Cup (when it was the YEC at Hannover)
he won 12 of the 14 "big" events at least once (missing Monte Carlo and Hamburg)

will Fed win Paris, Monte Carlo, Rome, or Roland Garros on the next go around, or at any point in his career?

lleyton hewitt - old stalwart still plugging away on tour
novak djokovic - righful #1, 5 GS and counting, and as always, leaving bad tastes in tracy austin's mouth
italian guys - forza azzurri, especially seppi and bolelli

all time favorites: juan carlos ferrero, michael chang and patrick rafter

One could also include the Olympics in this assessment.

It seems likely that Federer will attain these at some point. It took Agassi 3 tries to win his French Open title and he was 29 at the time.

you should count the Olympics, in that case Agassi won 13 of the 15 most impoartant titles in tennis.

What year did he win Stuttgart indoors though? I don't remember that.

Agassi won Madrid in '02. This event has moved around, from Stockholm to Essen to Stuttgart to Madrid.

I think he'll get at least 1 out of the 3 big missing clay ones, hopefully that will be the French. I don't see why he can't win Paris (the TMS) either.

These kinda statistics remind me once again how great a player Agassi was. To have won 12 out of 14 big ones is truly great. How many did Sampras win?

Sampras won 5 AMS plus the TMC and 3 slams. That makes 9, one behind Federer.

Champions deserve whatever they win playing within the laws of the game

Well, Agassi was definitely one of the "greats", but I think that the rules requiring players to play X amount of masters and whatnot were more lax in his era, meaning competition wasn't that stiff at a lot of them.

Only the indoor tournament had a 'complete' draw.
Bercy and the other one.

Re: Will Federer catch Agassi for most different "big" titles won?

agassi is 13 out of 15 with the olympics. but if you include davis cup, andre was there who contributed to his team winning it. so that makes him 14 out of 16 in all titles that matter.

i believe roger can go to 15 out of 16 winning the rest (RG, Paris, Monte Carlo, Rome, and the olympics). the olympics would be hard since he realistically only has 2 chances in his pro career (2008 and 2012 - which would be harder by then since he'll be 30 or 31 by then)

Davis cup would be questionable unless the Swiss come up with another top 5 or 10 player to help roger out in there...

not true, Agassi won 5 different TMS events - IW, Miami, Rome, Cincinnati, and Madrid - AFTER the ATP made those events mandatory. And the year he won Paris ('99), all the major names were in the draw.
