Federer def. Zib 6-1,6-2

Very quick and brutal match from Roger. Excellent stats- a very high first service % of 71.

In the 2nd set with Zib serving 2-4 down deuce Roger played a magnificent point getting to a stop volley and flicking it cross court for a winner.

A nice clean and short match- great way to start

Wow that ankle he injured in the Madrid final must be really bad

He's dropped 3 games in 4 sets since that.

That was a fantastic point - the crowd went wild and from then Federer just grinned his way to victory.

Great start for Federer He said in his interview after the match that he is surprised that it went so well considering the new court and new balls.

Re: Federer def. Zib 6-1,6-2

yeah, great point. Federer sprinted to reach a good volley of Zib on the other side of the court and when it almost looked like it would have rebounded two times Fed with a really great feeling touch made an amazing crosscourt winner, Zib looked shocked.

Yeah, it's so bad that after that he had to get away from the court as quickly as possible

I couldn't understand everything as well and I don't remember Rogers words good enough to translate them now. Maybe the interview with Heinz Günthardt will be on Youtube later on and I can try to translate - or we just have to wait for our Swiss MTF members who can help us out with Rogers exact words

He considered withdrawing because of his poor form..........you know, his ankle............but the atp said 'hell no. Ankle doesn't = poor form.' He needed to lose a couple of matches to use that excuse

A stop volley is like a drop shot except that you take it out of the air without letting it bounce- hence the "volley" part- and you hit it gently in such a way that it trickles over the net and bounces pretty low- hence the "stop" part
