Wawrinka refused to play tennis in the last 2 sets. Hopefully Kyrgios takes care of business in his next 2 matches, otherwise I'll have to cheer for Federer
I wouldn't get too carried away, it's Wawrinka at a Master 1000.... he gets upset regularly. If a Zverev or Kyrgios would actually make it through a Masters draw and WIN the tournament then I'd potentailly start considering them 'making strides'. Beating Wawrinka at Masters 1000 is not the same as beating, say, Federer deep in the draw
What a horrible performance from Stan from set 2 onwards.
Zverev did well to expose his shitty return and hit some nice shots here and there, but once the ball was in play Wawrinka mostly dominated buisiness here while Zverev was basically grinding till Stan imploded big time.
Can't stream right now because either the stream doesn't respond, or my connection. I know Stan doesn't do well in Miami, but I really thought he would pull it off after winning that 1st Set. The drop of opening service after winning a tight set was predictable (if not annoying again), but let me guess...I think the moment he was quite behind in the 2nd Set, he didn't make an attempt to up his level. He thought could recover in the 3rd, but just can't recover again. A. Zverev stayed solid, Stan panicked, thought it was a lost cause, and like the 2nd Set didn't make an effort to fight back? Right?
I guess nice win for Alex, but come on, a win here would put a mental advantage over Alex in the future, because of now he has the lead I think. Maybe I shouldn't worry in the long run I guess for clay -- maybe didn't want to exert much effort in order to preserve himself for the clay Masters as I hope he will -- but he typically has these patches of wins then losses so I really don't think another meek loss will help his mentality going through. He needs more tight matches to build up confidence that he could win ugly. Happy that he exceeded expectations for this particular month, but not happy that his depressing patches of play is still there.
P.S. Can Stan replace his 1st Round Byes to R16 instead? That is practically the consistent round he plays so bad in many tournaments he play.
Stan probably couldn't wait to go to his birthday party so he put in a pathetic effort in the last two sets. Really pathetic performance from the #1 seed. That's unacceptable.
Amazing how easily Wawrinka imploded after the first set. I thought he was begining to find consistency at a masters level and based on the fact that he cried in the IW final showed that he cared.
The right guy won though. Zverev needs a breaktrhough and he could very well have one this week. That being said he will probably lose to Kyrgios or Federer but oh well. Still his first 'big tournament' QF.
