How do professional tennis players survive?

Here is a list of prize money won to date:

http://www.atptennis.com/en/common/T...rent_Prize.pdf

Thomas Johansson (100) has earned $227,690 so far this year. What do you imagine his expenses (travel, coach, trainer, etc.) have to be for a year? How much of this (after taxes) does he retain?

Perhaps ToJo was a bad example (because he is well known and probably makes money on endorsements as well). But what about other players ranked close to him in prize money (say Marcos Daniel at 113)? I can't imagine he makes much (if anything) on endorsements. How does a guy like this make it out there?

Does anyone have insight into the life of a lower ranked / lesser known professional tennis player? Are they independently wealthy? Do they have wealthy relatives? How can they make it?

Thanks,

Re: How do professional tennis players survive?

prize money is chump change compared to all the money players make from sponsorships, appearance fees, under-the-table bargaining, and just showing up on entry lists before pulling out.

But these only apply to top players.

Most knowledgeable tennis fans understand players out of top 100 don't have an easy life.

true, it doesnt. I was referring to topish players. as Lee said, its tough if you have no funding. Sometimes a young gun will pop up and get support from some company or even the national federation (Donald Young for example)

Your comprehension amazes me, Blaze-2004. Great way to divert the thread.

Tennis outside say top 200, is really difficult. Anyone saw that movie about the Journey men? These guys outside top 200 or so, just play it for the passion of the sport. *Salute to them*

Found it. It is "The Journey Man" movie.

For World #5 Davydenko prize money is everything ~~ that`s because despite his high ranking, strong perfomance in Slams & 4-titles in 2006 the poor balding Russian still can`t find a clothing sponsor

In the prize money ranking. He's #55 in the entry ranking.

Thanks for the link, r2473, I didn't know that list and I had no idea a guy like Bjorkman earns so much prize money (#9, better than Nalbandian)!

Re: How do professional tennis players survive?

roger's numbers are sickening. and you know that's not even half of what he earns or has earned.

and yeah bjorkman is rich. pretty surprising to see him in top ten but obviously his doubles play helps a lot. good for him.

Marat Safin

Re: How do professional tennis players survive?

I don't know who it was (I think Taylor Dent). But this guy said you need around 100.000 $ to survive (including travelling etc.; not sure if the coach was included).

Re: How do professional tennis players survive?

Are the lists of the last years available too on the ATP website?
I was for example wondering about a guy like Llodra who decided to split with Santoro to focus on his single career. How much did he earn last year when he was playing with Santoro?

(2006:
19 Santoro, Fabrice $699,790
...
119 Llodra, Michael $173,280)
